It does appear that Gaiman's Death: The High Cost of Living is finally getting made into a feature film. Now the furious speculation begins - who will play Death? Ten years ago the obvious answer would have been Winona Ryder, but she is much too old now. So who will it be? Christina Ricci or Scarlett Johannson in black wigs spring to mind for me. Where does one find a perky goth teenager these days anyway?

On the reading stack: April Blood: Florence and the Plot Against the Medici - conspiracy, murder, and revenge in anticipation of seeing the Medici exhibit in Memphis next weekend, and The Power of Positive Confrontation, in an effort to overcome my standard sarcastic, nagging method of dealing. I'm also still reading The Salmon of Doubt; IMHO the funniest story so far was Adam's tale of becoming "the other human" to a pair of dogs.

Miscellaneous: refreshed hair dye, body polished, pedicured. I feel all fluffy now :) Even sewed a bit; I love the smell of french seams in the morning :P

Oh lord, C. and I were just arguing about who should play various of the Endless not long ago. (If there's ever been a more perfect Desire than Bowie, I don't know who it is.) I can't remember who we decided should be Death; C. still thinks Winona could do it, since a lot of the other folks whose names have been tossed about he thinks don't have the ability to be both as young and as old as Death needs to be. I'm pretty sure I suggested Scarlett or maybe Thora Birch (who was fabulous in "Ghost World").

I would have suggested Thora Birch, myself.

D. and I think that Angelina Jolie could do Desire quite well (but perhaps we're biased ;P) I thought Gaiman designed the Devil with Bowie in mind?

And yes... maybe Thora Birch could work. She has the attitude, I think...

Hm, Angelina? I don't know, I could maybe see that. I think I would have to see it though to decide if it really worked.

Yeah, I think that's my understanding as well; still think he'd make an excellent Desire though (but perhaps this is where I'm biased ;)). And Delerium of course has to be Tori.

Actually, Neil's choice for a long time was Fairuza Balk but I think she's probably too old for the role now.

Just looked up pix (http://www.actressarchives.com/fairuza/) of her now - if these are at all recent, she might still look right for the part.

I recognize her, but can't think for the life of me what I might have seen her in. Any suggestions?

Her first big thing was Return to Oz when she was a kid. She was also in The Craft (silly horror movie from about 10 yrs ago) and a lot of indie films. I'm blanking on what right now but she's been around for about 15 yrs or so, usually playing bitchy or goth chicks.

Strangely, I remember her as a child actress - she was in the Oz movie and "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" too, I think! Odd, who knew that wide-eyed innocent kid would go all hardcore nose-ringed goth girl? :)

Definitely. I'm not sure she's even that way anymore -- i haven't seen her in anything recently.

Have you seen Kristen Stewart? She played Jodie Foster's daughter in Panic Room. She is still a young teen, but I think she has remarkable talent and would do well in this adaptation.

Given how long it might take to get this to the screen, she might end up being old enough!

Eliza Dushku?

She'd need a lot of makeup, but so would 'most anybody. Emmanuelle Chriqui also comes to mind.

Naomi Watts would have worked out, back when she was being cute and Jet Girl.

Eliza Dusku is so stuck in my head as tough girl Faith that it's very hard for me to imagine her as the cheerful-almost-bouncy Death. Maybe not rule her out completely, but I ain't seeing it.

You may be onto something there with Emmanuelle Chriqui though - I remember her from 100 Girls; she might could do it with enough geisha makeup :)
