what to/not to wear
Jan. 8th, 2009 08:06 pmBeen editing and thinking about my wardrobe a lot of late. I'm getting rid of a lot of things that are the wrong size, fit, or are just plain worn out and am making a conscious effort to replace them with quality pieces and not just any old rubbish that keeps me covered. That, and new social situations (posher parties, weddings, etc.) means I need things I didn't think about before.

What about you? What are your wardrobe do's, don'ts, don't do enough of, wannas?
Stuff I won't wear at any cost:
- Orange - makes me look jaundiced
- Pastels - make me look washed out
- Turtlenecks - short waist + full bust = I look like my tits grow out of my waist :P
- Halter tops, spaghetti straps, strapless, or the like - see: full bust
Stuff I do wear and perhaps shouldn't, or at least not as often:
- Extremely worn out things (I have a pair of pajama bottoms that are starting to rip at the drawstring, but I can't let 'em go)
- Shapeless sweaters (but hey, it's winter!)
- The same pair of sweatpants over and over
Stuff I rarely wear but have just in case:
- Hose, nude and black
- Tights, black
- Black dresses in summer and winter weights
- Plain heels
- Body shaping/girdle thing (yes, I'm getting a bit soft 'round the middle)
Stuff I really ought to wear more often:
- Weird shoes
- Tailored jackets
- Tux shirts (inexplicably, I have 3)
- Skirts with boots
Stuff I need:
- Another pair of jeans
- Black and grey pants (on order; I'll see if they're keepers when they get here)
- A pair of dark street sneakers that support my arches
Stuff that's mostly out of reach:
- More Issey Miyake
- More Vivienne Westwood, especially the rocking horse boots, though affordable knockoffs may render this one reachable
What about you? What are your wardrobe do's, don'ts, don't do enough of, wannas?

Date: 2009-01-09 01:47 am (UTC)I do wear pastels though it tends to be pale blue. I have lost track of how many pale blue t-shirts (expecially fandom related) I have.
I've done a lot of wardrobe revamping over the last couple of years. My 20th HS reunion, loosing the 15 lbs. I'd put on after having the kidlet, finding clothes that I liked, and finally feeling like I could spend the money on what I wanted rather than gear things towards practical purchases have all helped.
I used to like having a little bit of all colors. Now, it's black and purple with the occasional pale blue, dark blue, or red. It's a rare day when I don't wear something that's purple (now I'm a turtle! ;-p).
Things I need more of: cute short skirts. I've got a few (darling grey pleated mini, flouncy black). I'd like a couple more in black.
I'd love cute shoes that actually fit. Being a 6W makes that difficult. I'd love a pair of really funky Chuck Taylor high tops and a pair of deep purple embroidered belly dance slippers (the kind you see at Pennsic).
I'd also like a corset or several, both as lingerie and outerwear. I'd also like some decent bras.
Otherwise, I'm good to go. I'm really happy with the way my wardrobe has changed over the past year. I think I look way hotter than I have in ages and I finally feel like I have some style. It's not what's in fashion mags but it's mine.

Chucks and corsets.. yay! For the latter especially, hie thyself to Costume Con!

Date: 2009-01-09 03:25 am (UTC)Agreed on the orange and yellow, but coral is okay ... also avoid pastels as I love my colours bright and/or deep.
Have been neglecting fancy vests, nicer shirts, etc., as the crowded, dusty warehouse environment just isn't friendly to 'em ... however my dept. will be moving into larger, cleaner, new space within the next couple of months, so I should end up wearing a larger percentage of my closet contents ... it'll almost be like getting a new wardrobe without laying out any money.
Also need to get back into sewing and transform some of the fabric stash into new wearables (figure I'm also off to a decent start on that by having picked up knitting needles again)
Now if only shoes that fit weren't such a rarity ...

Date: 2009-01-09 03:45 am (UTC)And I know what you mean about not wanting to get gunge all over your good clothes!
Love old clothes ... all properly broken in and body-molded :-)
Date: 2009-01-09 04:49 am (UTC)Must be either senility or tiredness ... 'twas Woolco, not Woolworths. And the takeover was in 1994, so this sweatshirt is 14 years old, has been laundered to death and yet is nowhere near gauzelike, hardly pills, and refuses to stain. And if there's any synthetic fibre content to it, it's a very low percentage, 'cause it feels the same to my skin as my 100% cotton sweatshirts. Wow, I'm suddenly all impressed by my favourite little cheapie (or cheapies, actually ... at the time I splurged and blew six bucks to get two of them)
