Making notes now so I'll know how much tizzying to expect next time I plan international travel:

Surprisingly, not much inner control freaking turmoil. Moved $ in accounts around, check (after advising bank of same, check); setting mailing lists to nomail, check; getting out suitcase and starting to pack, check.

Remembering to breathe and that apart from some bare essentials (prescriptions/passport), I can get anything I need/forget once I get there.

Take mountains of echinacea/vitamin c/handy wipes for the plane trip. Can't hurt and might help me avoid the flu/cold from hell I got last time I was on a transatlantic flight (England, '99).

I speak little of the language and what I have is tripping over my ancient French. No matter - I know "espresso", "scusi", and "bankomat".

Smile a lot, say "Mi scusi, grazie," when you bump against someone, and remember that "latte" is a glass of hot steamed milk, not the beverage obtainable at Starbucks (*that* is called either "un macchiato" or "cafe Americano"). Also, "per piacere" is much more common than "per favore" for "please," and many people in restaurants and shops speak a bit of English.

Say hello to Via della Spada and the Duomo for me, and have a wonderful time! *envies*

Start taking the echinacea about 10 days before your trip. It works by amping up your immune system so it needs some time to do it. Also, after your trip, stop taking it as it looses it's efficacy after you take it for a couple of weeks.

Have fun in Florence! I can't wait to hear about it when you ge back!

I also recommend Airborne which is a lot of the same herbs with a few more but has a proven record of helping avoid airplane ick.

[livejournal.com profile] shy_kat and I were in Florence this spring for a few days (during two and a half months in Italy). We highly recommend the Bargello Museum and Santa Maria Novella church across from the train station---as well as the Uffizi, of course. And you must, absolutely must, eat some gelato at Perche No on Via Dei Tavolini in the "centro storico" (historic district). It's the stuff of dreams.

Have a wonderful time, and if you would like any more advice about travel in Italy, just drop me a line (or check out our travel blog at www.theslowroad.org).

I'll be bringing Emergen-C packets with on the trip...it being flu season & all. Dunno if it helps, but it can't hurt...

Jenn and I are flying out from Dayton to Atlanta to Paris to Florence on Tuesday. Good luck!!
