areas of my inexpertise
Jul. 8th, 2008 09:27 pmYa'll frequently read here about my hobbies - fencing, sewing, fencing, costume, books and a bit of fencing :P What I obviously leave out are the hobbies I'd love to take up if it weren't for time/circumstance:
What do y'all want to do, once you're able?
- weight lifting - Stumptuous tempts me to join a gym and lift some serious iron, but there are only so many hours in a day. Almost any other physical activity has to make it through my fencing filter ("will it help my game?") to be considered, and while I do lift dumbells to help me heft the rapier, anything more intense takes a back seat.
Having said this, I am going to get to try out wall climbing a few weeks from now.... - Serious writing - I still write a little with friends in an RPG and have saved a few ideas here and there, but I haven't seriously dug into some of my solo ideas because of lack of time. I hang on to those notes though, because I love telling stories, and some snowed-in winter night I might flesh one out.
- Drawing/painting/other 2-d art - I drew a lot as a kid and an adult sketching class I took a few years ago enlightened me to how little I really knew about drawing! For now though, all my creative appetites are fed by sewing (though I keep a bin of art supplies, just in case).

Date: 2008-07-13 05:00 pm (UTC)Soldering and welding ... not that I have any driving urge to make of hobby of them, but I've always wanted to have done it to know the feel of it.
Crochet ... knitting came to me almost as easily as breathing, but crochet has obstinately remained one of those things I simply cannot get into my head/memory (I can do basic stitches as long as the how-to diagrams are in front of me, but if you take those pictures away from me, even after I've been doing it for hours, I'm stuck. Weird that, and I'd love to figure out why)
Regaining my once-upon-a-time reasonable fluency in French would be nice, but I'd probably have it trickle away again from lack of use the same way it did the first time.
Woodworking/carpentry ... I've always liked working with tools and with wood. Workshop space is the first requirement for that one ...
XML/XSLT ... this one I will and must do, 'cause I want to modify my home cataloguing software to do a series search for books, subject search for movies and for music, etc. ... ;p
