Ya'll frequently read here about my hobbies - fencing, sewing, fencing, costume, books and a bit of fencing :P What I obviously leave out are the hobbies I'd love to take up if it weren't for time/circumstance:

  • weight lifting - Stumptuous tempts me to join a gym and lift some serious iron, but there are only so many hours in a day. Almost any other physical activity has to make it through my fencing filter ("will it help my game?") to be considered, and while I do lift dumbells to help me heft the rapier, anything more intense takes a back seat.

Having said this, I am going to get to try out wall climbing a few weeks from now....

  • Serious writing - I still write a little with friends in an RPG and have saved a few ideas here and there, but I haven't seriously dug into some of my solo ideas because of lack of time. I hang on to those notes though, because I love telling stories, and some snowed-in winter night I might flesh one out.

  • Drawing/painting/other 2-d art - I drew a lot as a kid and an adult sketching class I took a few years ago enlightened me to how little I really knew about drawing! For now though, all my creative appetites are fed by sewing (though I keep a bin of art supplies, just in case).

What do y'all want to do, once you're able?

Wall climbing is some serious fun and to me always seemed to lead to a lot of introspective moments.

Things I want to do... *grins* That could be a long list. I can say I've been pretty fortunate in that I've managed to at least get a toehold in almost everything I've wanted to do. Some I very much wish I had more time for.

Fencing - desperately need more time to go back to. It is the one sport/exercise that I ever fell in love with and was able to say, "Yes, this is it."

Writing - I dabble and have a publication or two to my name but want to really indulge. Finish that poor much-ignored novel (and the 4-5 short stories that are in various states of undress).

French/Spanish - I would LOVE to be fluent. I can read a newspaper but that doesn't do any good when dealing with people. Alas, practice, practice, practice.

Film/Podcast - These broadcast pursuits are very time consuming and I'm barely keeping up with them as is but they are fun, an ego boost and have actually been a positive influence on (of all things) my work resume.

Reading - Sad as it sounds I have found that I don't make time to read anymore. Last year, I had to make a New Year's resolution to force myself to actually read fiction for pleasure. 50 books a year. And needed the same requirement again this year.

When did you do wall climbing? What kind of workout was it (what did it work)?

And you are very much welcome back at club - you're still listed on the ladder, you know!

If you start climbing seriously, you should know that Boulder, where I live, is a veritable climbing Mekka!

I'd of course want to write more, like everyone else and their cat..

And then I'd want to run a RPG campaign again, preferably a Lovecraft inspired one...

..and do some Tai Chi and horseback riding agian

Writing, yes - I'm in a small RPG atm, which is fun and silly but the novel remains unbegun. Taking over the world one mind at a time will have to wait until the Earth's rotation slows and we get that 36 hour day I so desperately need.

I'm just starting to do some Yoga which is a BITCH (and I had always thought I was fairly flexible but apparently NOT), but I think the rewards will come with time.

Dog. I want a puppy, daddy.

And I want to know everything there is to know about everything, but my brain isn't big enough. Can one upgrade to one with more memory, does anyone know?

Where/when are you planning to try wall climbing? Not my thing. But, I'm curious.

One of my fencing buddies is arranging for a "climbing party" here (http://www.rockvillemd.gov/climbinggym) in a couple of weeks.

I'm with you on the climbing, I got a small taste at the company picnic last year and plan to take a basic course in the near future. That will probably happen once the semester is finished.

Reading - Need to find/make the time to read again for pleasure.

Language - I would love to re-learn French and Spanish. I also want to learn Italian.

Triathlons - I want to do these again, next season I should be back to it too.

What did you think of the climbing?

My comment is similar to that to [livejournal.com profile] kiya above - seems there's a lot of learning foreign language/making time to read going around...

Kettlebells vs. Weightlifting

Meant to include this, you should check out kettlebells instead of straight up weight-lifting. Awesome freaking workout.

Also check out bodyweightculture.com for body-weight exercise suggestions and forum.brandxmartialarts.com/viewforum.php?f=16 for crossfit craziness.

Thanks for the tip!

I've seen, and been tempted by, kettlebells! Not sure when/how I'd implement them into my routine, but if there's such thing as a 'starter party' like I'm doing for climbing (see above), maybe one weekend I'll do that.

There are so many things.

Thanks to yours and [livejournal.com profile] jlsjlsjls's post I would like to learn how to sew and how to knit.

I want to learn diving, and swim with the sharks...not too large sharks though.

Learn to ride horses Western style.

I would like to go more serious with my orchids, learn how to keep more difficult spieces. The same goes for my amphibians.

I would really love to resurrect my dead RPG muse. Bring on the protoblood. And of course I would like to be able to write a book, even if only a short novel.

And learn Japanese, or Chinese mandarin or canton.

And....

You know how it is.

Stumpwork ... I bought that gorgeous book on the subject a long time ago, but have yet to have the huge block of time (with no other to-dos looming at me) to learn it with the necessary patience.

Soldering and welding ... not that I have any driving urge to make of hobby of them, but I've always wanted to have done it to know the feel of it.

Crochet ... knitting came to me almost as easily as breathing, but crochet has obstinately remained one of those things I simply cannot get into my head/memory (I can do basic stitches as long as the how-to diagrams are in front of me, but if you take those pictures away from me, even after I've been doing it for hours, I'm stuck. Weird that, and I'd love to figure out why)

Regaining my once-upon-a-time reasonable fluency in French would be nice, but I'd probably have it trickle away again from lack of use the same way it did the first time.

Woodworking/carpentry ... I've always liked working with tools and with wood. Workshop space is the first requirement for that one ...

XML/XSLT ... this one I will and must do, 'cause I want to modify my home cataloguing software to do a series search for books, subject search for movies and for music, etc. ... ;p
