Took another day off work in attempt to wipe the ick once and for all, to some avail. Nose firmly back to grindstone tomorrow, but not without some sticker shock:

I went to my annual eye doctor's appointment today and was disappointed both that my eyes have gotten worse and that the price of glasses is so staggering. It's been a couple of years since my last pair and even though D. wasn't working then I still don't remember my current frames costing that much!*

I took a quick cruise of the glasses shops at the local mall and tried on a few pair, and for the past hour or so I've been snooping around online to see if I can't find a bargain (or hell, just cheaper than what my doc's office is charging) and I'm already tired of looking at frames: I took the measurements off my current set and it rather limits my options as they're made for kids!

I think I've found one option that's well over the $40 promised at the site above but still substantially less than the ~$450(!) I was offered today. Any suggestions of small, local frames shops not eager to pick my pocket are most welcome!

*Don't even start me about the allergy eye drops I coughed up for. Tiniest bottle in the world. They'd better work, and I'd better always get them in right the first time :P

I recommend Costco. They're really good at making glasses. I have a tough prescription & they get it right every time. Very reasonable price too.

I second the Cosco idea -- I have some very fine frames from BJ's, which is a Costco/Sam's club kinda place.

My frames usually cost well under $80. It's my lenses that are expensive.

$80's a vast improvement - thanks for the tip! I do plan to check them out after D. finishes his CISSP this weekend (he's the one with the membership).

While you're there, have them add you to his membership. No marriage relationship required. They don't even check IDs to make sure you have the same address (I share w/ my father since my mom doesn't drive and therefore doesn't need an independent membership).

My cousin has shared w/ his roommate before.

And, I think the people at the Beltsville Costco do a great job of fitting glasses as well.

It's a chain, but I had good luck with the optician at the Super!Target. $450 seems a bit crazy.

Yeeee-ipes!!! And people wonder why I'm still only on my second pair frames since age 18 (well mostly it's because I tend to dislike 99% of the styles on offer, so am still sticking like glue to my comfy antiqued brass ones, but I shudder to think what prices have risen to since I bought them)
