D. and I have been applying "budget insulation" (read: pallet wrap) to the windows in fits and starts for the past week or so. Fits and starts because 1) it's a bitch to work with (only slightly heavier than saran wrap, it clings to itself in all the wrong places/times in just the same way), and 2) the occasional fits of warm weather is a strong disincentive.

Because even though it's not pretty, it DOES work! We wrapped most of the upstairs windows last week and when it got warm this weekend the bedroom was like an oven (80F when not running the heat). Given the predicted warm weather again this weekend, I'm reluctant to go to the frustrating effort if we're going to need to tear it down to open the windows, but when it does get cold it's going to save us $ on the heat bill. Decisions, decisions...

Since light wasn't an issue, I've often insulated my crappy single-pane windows with polarfleece remnants and a staple gun. While the fabric overlapped the gap around the windows, the staples went into the window frame itself so the windows could still be opened if it suddenly got warm.

Currently my bedroom window is actually covered in black wool! I got about 10 yards from someone stash-cleaning, I already HAVE a black cloak, and there is no way I'm going to make more than one black gown, so I have rather a lot of extra. And since it's mostly for sleeping I don't care that it's dark.

Ach, you find 100% black wool and you do this with it? Alas, it breaks my little black costumers heart! ;)

I don't think it's 100% - it's a blend though I've not bothered to find out blended with what.

I already have a black linen workingwomen's overgown, and you can only wear so much black! I will be making myself a kirtle-bodice, a folkwear jacket, and probably an overgown. That STILL leaves like 5 yards leftover.

Plastic windows ... what memories you bring back (grew up in a place where it was weird to see a house without 'em in winter)
