hugs and another dastardly meme

I was going to write an insightful post about this article about the need to hug and the sad unacceptability of most non-sexual touch, but I think the author says a lot of what I'd try to write, and doesn't stumble miserably over his words as I might :P

What made me think of it was the sexual orientation quiz from a few posts back - hardly scientific, but I found it interesting that some of my most resolutely straight friends still came out as "a little bi" - I'm guessing because they didn't tick the selection for "absolute revulsion" re: hugging a member of the same sex.

I especially find it sad that so many straight men don't seem to feel like they can hug their male friends without being suspected of The Gay. Never having been a straight man, I can't begin to understand what is going through their heads, but I pity them.

See? Hardly well-written or insightful at all. That's what you get from someone who has been writing mostly SQL statements for the past three days :P So sad - I even had to use this little internet toy to design my perfect rock band:

I was presuming that was exactly why my results came back that way.

Never having been a straight man, I can't begin to understand what is going through their heads, but I pity them.

Speaking as one, I don't think I'm a good data point and/or I'm making very broad assumptions. I know some who do the full body hug just fine and seem very straight to me, just as I do, but most others hardly contact at all during straight male to straight male hugs.

Most of the straight men I know socially - including D. - aren't squicky about full body hugs with other guys. Most of them are unusually enlightened/former ravers or attached to that scene, where hugging and other non sexual touch is positively encouraged :)

So, I still don't get it :P

I'll accept a hug from friends or family, but I'm not big on being touched by people I don't know, regardless of sex. I don't usually initiate hugs with other people, but I put that down to generic shuffling male awkwardness. :)
