I saw two goth kids while I was at the grocery.

Notable if only because I don't see very many in the 'burbs, and because they were so well turned out - vests and platform-buckled boots and careful coordination (such as it is, everything being black).

I almost stopped one of them to ask him where he got his boots, but ultimately refrained. I remembered that to anyone under 18 I surely appear to be mad old bat and my expressing interest in his footwear would have destroyed his sartorial self-confidence for life (or, at least, until college) :P

I'm the "grownup" now. That CRACKS me up!

I'm the opposite -- I always stop and compliment. Even a short line like "Kewl boots" would have done the job. If you add a "Kewl boots/hair/jacket -- wish I had the guts to wear that/those" it only adds to your own kewl factor, and raises the goth's self-confidence. Goths, as you well know, face so much misunderstanding and hate, that I think it's a good thing to stop and basically say "Yeah, I look like the typical 'burb matron now, but it's all a cover because under these wrinkles and jobclothes, I totally identify. You rock."

You're probably right - it wouldn't have killed either of us if I'd said anything.

And I really DID want to know where those boots came from!!

If it was me, I'd find the kid's LJ later that night: "Today got lame compliment from weird old coot. What's up with old people anyway?"

Heh or maybe not. I know what you mean about actually feeling old, though. Not like grandfather old or anything but just realizing there's a social or generational division between me and people younger than myself, whereas previously I was always in the youngest (adult) subgroup.
