Courtney Crumrin comic book series - found by D., it's part Harry Potter, part Lemony Snicket, and possibly darker/gorier than either. "The Night Things" series is 4 rather "stand-alone" stories that set the stage - the more interesting plots come later. Good stuff :)
The Watchmen - yes, it's been on the bookshelf for years, I've just procrastinated valiantly until a couple of days ago :P Now I can't put it down! Highly recommended, but I suspect most of you have read it already!
