I've got a slew of holds lining up like Rockettes at the library, but until they arrive I'm far from empty handed:

Courtney Crumrin comic book series - found by D., it's part Harry Potter, part Lemony Snicket, and possibly darker/gorier than either. "The Night Things" series is 4 rather "stand-alone" stories that set the stage - the more interesting plots come later. Good stuff :)

The Watchmen - yes, it's been on the bookshelf for years, I've just procrastinated valiantly until a couple of days ago :P Now I can't put it down! Highly recommended, but I suspect most of you have read it already!

OOOOOH, The Watchmen!!!! I read that when it came out and have re-read it periodically ever since. Be sure to watch the things in the background - signs, posters, names on restaurants and buildings - all subtle kinds of things going on.

And the story is incredible, isn't it? Who's your favorite character? I keep going back and forth between Rorshach and Dr. Manhattan.

Rorshach reminds me of Savonarola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girolamo_Savonarola), or "warrior monk" types in general - he thinks he's right and righteous by doG, and bad luck for anyone who gets in his way!

Also Nite Owl is interesting - turns his back on his former life but can't seem to get rid of any of it. I think all of the characterizations are really well done, so I can't pick one as yet!

Oh, yeah - Night Owl is such a good character, I feel very sad for him - he's still haunted by it and I think he really regrets leaving it behind - seems like his life sort of just faded away after that.

I confess that I'm one of the five people on the planet who haven't read The Watchmen (yet), although I've certainly heard of 'em. Part of MY centuries-high to-read/watch/make/do list. :P

The Courtney Crumrin looks like fun too ... scanned through one of the sample chapters and LIKED! :-)

In what way? Read the credits to me, please??!!!! Pretty please???!!!! I'm asking 'cause I got all excited when I saw this and did a Google and all I turned up was that Ted Naifeh was raised in San Mateo and now lives in San Francisco and that the first publisher to pick up the series was in Portland, Oregon.

#1 of "Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things" is indeed copyright Oni Press of Portland, but proudly types at the end "PRINTED IN CANADA".

So, ok, I was wrong - perhaps not strictly a Canadian invention, but certainly a CA printer had something to do with getting it out there :)

I loved the Watchmen, and can see why is is often cited for being a major influence on comics.

And my favorite character is Rorshach, even if he is completely insane - - he's the poor man's Batman (who frankly has issues of his own - -) ;)

Have you heard anything about the movie that;s supposed to be in pre production?

That's been rumoured for a long time, do you mean they are finally doing it???? Ooooh! Scary - done right and it could be simply amazing, done poorly and oh, boy, watch out!
