When it comes to getting gas prices under control, George Bush has misled America. America is more dependent than ever on Mid-East oil. John and I have a plan to make America energy independent by investing in new technologies and alternative fuels. John and I believe we need to rely on American ingenuity and brainpower to ensure our country's freedom and independence, not on the Royal Saudi family.

this really get my hopes up! it's year 2004 and the World is still depending on oil!?? the oil industry lobbying hold us back and prevents the big discovery of teleportatins technology. give me StarTrek now! sitting here and yell does not help, Sweden is way too small.

I don't think the oil thing is emphasized nearly enough here - Americans are, IMHO spoiled by having gas for under $2USD/gallon - when it goes over this it's a newsworthy story. Isn't gas much more expensive in other countries?

I swear, I joke that sometimes the whole Iraq war is like a perverse, real life version of "Dune" - the spice (oil) must flow! :/

we pay approxiamtely 10 SEK/L, I think 1 gallon is about 4L and $1 is about 10 SEK so that would give we pay pretty much double to what you pay for the gas.

yep, Dune allright, the spice must flow to whatever cost, imagine the look on Mr Bush's face once the Iraqi people comes riding them gigant worms. hi ho Silver!

***whistles*** Even if ALL he manages is to get some sort of affordable-to-everyone national health care plan in place, quality of life in the U.S. will be DRASTICALLY improved!!!! :-))))

I would hope that healthcare becomes a huge sticking point for Bush - I think I am finally noticing it now because, it seems, for the first time ever I know people who have inadequate/no health insurance. For reasons of public health, if nothing else, there needs to be something more than what is currently offered to many people.

I confess that I have always thought it was NUTS that the U.S. had no official health care system in place. Especially when one considers the enormous economic benefits of having the population in good health. Keeping my fingers crossed for all of you on this one!

I think most non-Americans find it odd. My guess is that a lot of it comes down to the leftover Puritan ideology that if you don't work and contribute, you don't deserve health care :( Unfortunately this fails to take note of the importance of public health (if your neighbor gets his vaccinations, he won't be coughing all over the neighborhood to make you sick), or the fact that more and more Americans are working and still getting inadequate health insurance, or none at all.

Laurie Garret wrote a book (http://www.lauriegarrett.com/index_betrayal.html) about the breakdown of global public health. I've not read it (yet), but want to (really regret missing her talk at work when it came out - I was, er, working :/). Though the scope is international, I think some of the talking points may well point to the current state of public health in the U.S.

Well, you've just made ME thankful that Puritans had nothing to do with the founding of MY country ***grin***

Most national plans still demand some form of contribution (Canada's do, at least), but when EVERYBODY contributes, the price is pretty reasonable ($44.00 per month for a single adult in Alberta).

Yeah!

The guy was seven blocks from my house. And I didn't go see him. Dang. But it was Thursday, and I'd just staggered off a plane & was bound for my bed, and all.
