Via Slashdot - Fox didn't give the series a chance, but Universal bought the movie rights and Whedon is going to try and make a <http://hollywoodreporter.com/thr/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1969026">big screen version. It really was such an excellent little show, and got cancelled just as they were started to develop their first substantial story arc.

I just hope that Firefly: The Movie is not as crap as Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Movie. The latter put me off the series for years - I didn't discover it until D. became addicted and foisted it upon me!

As a teacher of adult beginners, I can appreciate your wanting to just take it slow and just develop your speed/balance/coordination first, then maybe compete later. Competition isn't for everyone, but I think it can be a fun, positive, social thing for most people, most of the time. I think that's why fencers push other fencers to compete - they want their friends to feel the same rush they feel. Yes, the cost of all the required equipment, plus the USFA membership, plus the tournament fee, can be daunting. I am feeling the pinch this season with foil. I would like to fence foil, but all of my equipment had rotted from overuse ages ago and then disuse over the past few years. I'm looking at the cost of a new lame, 3 electrical foils, and 2 foil body cords and I'm thinking... Eh, maybe not!
