Via Slashdot - Fox didn't give the series a chance, but Universal bought the movie rights and Whedon is going to try and make a <http://hollywoodreporter.com/thr/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1969026">big screen version. It really was such an excellent little show, and got cancelled just as they were started to develop their first substantial story arc.

I just hope that Firefly: The Movie is not as crap as Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Movie. The latter put me off the series for years - I didn't discover it until D. became addicted and foisted it upon me!

((ahem)) Running to the defense of the real Buffy the Vampire Slayer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103893/)... The movie was long before the series (movie 1992, series 1997). There's a whole bunch of people (ahem, like me) who were saddened to see that the TV show would NOT be anything like the movie (i.e. edgy and campy), rather, that it would be a TV soap opera Buffy with the magically dissolving vampires ("now featuring absoltely no blood!"). Granted, I didn't watch more than about 10 minutes of 2 or 3 episodes of the show ever, but, my conclusion is drawn from listening to other people (99% women) talk about the TV show... Based on those conversations, I quickly came to the conclusions the TV show was the kind of thing that it seemed people tuned into just to see who Buffy was going to be involved romantically with on any given week. That is not camp and edgy... that's a soap opera, IMHO.

That said, I don't know anything about Firefly. Never seen or heard of. So at least when you post about it, I won't come in and try to tell you what's what on your journal. :)

Hey, everyone's welcome to their opinion. I'll be honest - I've not seen the movie in years, but I remember disliking it because the Buffy character was such a total airhead! I failed to see how ANYONE so dim could protect the world from vampires or anything else!

And yes, they did start the tv Buffy out as rather "fluffy", but I argue that the series was superior in several ways, if only because the writing was tight, the acting was very good, and the characters actually DEVELOPED (of course, it's easier to develop characters if you have several seasons instead of 2 hours)!

I have no problem with edgy/campy - hell, I LOVE Lexx - but we'll have to agree to disagree on this one!

Fair enough. I don't remember Buffy very well, actually. I remember Donald Sutherland's character being cool.

Just to give it another chance, I watched it again over the weekend. 'Fraid it was as lackluster as I remember - the potential for "so-bad-it's-good" is there, but it doesn't dare be as truly awful as it could have been :P

Re: in the same neck of the woods (can't find your original comment) - indeed we are! You ever compete against the Chevy Chase folks?

Glad you gave it a second chance, and sorry it still disappointed. For what it's worth, I did try to watch a Buffy re-run on FX over the weekend, but only got as far as the first commercial break.

Yes, I fence epee (see icon) mostly, on a rare occasion foil and even rarer sabre. I sort-of know Mark H., Theodore P., Jasmine C. -- the epee fencers mostly. I sort of know a couple of the foil fencers, but only peripherally.

When are you going to start doing tournaments? I'll have to look for you when you do.

Yep - I know Mark H.; he used to fence at Potomac but switched to epee. I still see him occasionally at CCFC. Small world!

Re: "when" am I going to start competing? :P Funny everyone says it like that, when I only started fencing to improve my speed/balance/coordination!

Seriously - I don't know. My coach and some of my fencing buddies have asked the same question, and while I don't think I'm that good I don't completely rule out the idea of tournaments. At some point I might like to participate in a formal competition just to see how well I do against my peers. For now it's on indefinite standby due to economic constraints.

As a teacher of adult beginners, I can appreciate your wanting to just take it slow and just develop your speed/balance/coordination first, then maybe compete later. Competition isn't for everyone, but I think it can be a fun, positive, social thing for most people, most of the time. I think that's why fencers push other fencers to compete - they want their friends to feel the same rush they feel. Yes, the cost of all the required equipment, plus the USFA membership, plus the tournament fee, can be daunting. I am feeling the pinch this season with foil. I would like to fence foil, but all of my equipment had rotted from overuse ages ago and then disuse over the past few years. I'm looking at the cost of a new lame, 3 electrical foils, and 2 foil body cords and I'm thinking... Eh, maybe not!
