Gathered from here, there, and everywhere:

Learn to be a better writer by reading fanfiction - especially the bits about villians needing motivation and using crackfic to get unstuck.

John Cleese on creativity - “Creativity is not a talent. It is a way of operating.” - so true. Hat tip @ITSLENNYHENRY (yes, the real one).

Femme Doctors and crossplayers: not that different - elegant description of the what cross play is and isn’t, and why it’s appealing. Wonderful fun, but also put on your gender studies hat.

Dates to remember for 2013 - first two weeks of May are looking awfully good. And there’s gonna be a 3rd Riddick movie? Hat tip D.

The Star Trek-Middleman crossover you’ve been cautiously excited for - seriously, if you never watched The Middleman, go forth and view now. It’s rather like Firefly, killed before it’s time, wonderfully witty and only 13 hours of footage. Related: Middleman-Doctor Who crossover.

Edit 7:45 pm Links fixed. Dunno what LJ was doing adding extra quotes.

Oooo ... nice stuff! Found an article with clips about "The Middleman" and was sold about 30 seconds into watching the first one ... LOL! Definitely adding this to my DVD collection ... thank you!

And Cleese oughta know creativity, having been responsible for one of the greatest short-lived (though deliberately in his case) series of all time. :-)

Fanfic article is timely as this holiday season saw me spending some time in that world for the first time in ages and being lucky enough to be rewarded with a few treasures among the dross. Another use for fanfic is that it can provide a far better timeline overview than official sites can when one is trying to do a catch-up on a fictional world one has neglected for a long while, simply because it does tend to target important plot/character moments. All "research" should be so much fun. ;-)

I have converted another Middlefan. My work here is done :P

I agree - fanfic can focus on plot points in a way that originators can't, if only because they have the time and desire to get it JUST RIGHT.

What fandoms are you reading? I'm wasting far too much time in the Avengers 'verse.

fanfic can focus on plot points in a way that originators can't, if only because they have the time and desire to get it JUST RIGHT.

Plus the fanfic writers don't have the paranoid editors ordering them to not follow through on stuff they've set up (someday somebody's gotta write an encyclopedia of Chris Claremont proposed plotlines that freaked out the management ***GRIN***)

The graphics collection of the public library here has been strongly DC and indie-oriented, but recent changes in their selection staff have resulted in a swing back to purchasing Marvel compilations ... mainly X-Men. So, having been out of the loop for a while, I wanted to get a feel for who was who these days, both characters and writers since those two factors determine how the library wants me to classify individual titles (some are by author, some by character, and I have to make the judgment call on which way they go), and that got me making some purchases for my own personal library. Acquired some older stuff like the huge "Mutant Massacre" and "Fall of the Mutants" volumes as well as new ones like the Jason Aaron "Wolverine" omnibus (if you wanna give your hands, wrists and forearms a good muscle-building workout, read THAT sucker through in one sitting). And then also picked up a few compilations of the original "Excalibur" since that's an old fave of mine and the books had extras like a Pryde and Wisdom miniseries I'd never heard of (quite a surprise to someone who was pretty sure she owned a complete run of the original "Excalibur" and all its spinoffs), and then that led to "Excalibur" fanfic as well ... well, you know how it goes. Logan, Kurt, and Kitty were always my favourites in the X-universe and I did find some gems that I though had them perfectly in character (once I filtered out all the movieverse and evolution stuff).
