[livejournal.com profile] dustdaughter pointed out Shonibare's work to me over a month ago. I liked his aesthetic right away - it reminds me of Vivienne Westwood's in the sense that he takes historic European clothing and turns it on its ear - in his case, 18th century frock coats and the like made out of African fabrics.

Which aren't African, as it happens - they're Dutch batiks purchased in London. Steampunker Ay-Leen the Peacemaker has a thoughtful writeup on the cross-cultural inspirations and implications of his work over at her blog. I'd actually recommend her entire Beyond Victoriana series on non-Eurocentric steampunk (go for the pretty clothes, stay for the political/cultural deconstruction).

As it turns out, his exhibit at the NMAfA goes through March 7. Anyone interested in going in the new year?

Violet Blue enthuses over Isabella Rossellini's Green Porn short films, which are about insectoid sex (no, really). Photos and video at the link. I too want to be Isabella Rossellini when I grow up, and after that I want to be Judi Dench....

Found over in [livejournal.com profile] fireflyfans: Ask Inara in the Arisia con newsletter - click on any of the "Clear Ether" links to read "Inara"'s advice to characters of many fandoms.

From [livejournal.com profile] shemhazai, more real boobage from Uncovered: Busting Out in the Big Apple (link safe for work; photos from it perhaps not so much).

Woke up this morning with the vague intention to attend a local SCA event, only to find that it was very much not as local as expected. Which worked out, because there's no shortage of things to do around here - laundry, sewing, reading, exercise.

Of the latter I did an upper body workout that taxed as much as it exhilirated. I'm gonna feel stiff as a board tomorrow but it will have been worth it :)

[livejournal.com profile] dotheranon and I went to see "National Treasure 2", which was fun in an action packed, butchered history Indiana Jones kind of way. And, it had Helen Mirren! We followed it up with chickennnnnn and hot sauce, which was good because I was ready to eat a horse!

I have been dabbling on and off surface treatments for Zoey vest for ~2 weeks and none of the ratios of gloss to leather dye has produced a finish that really improves the look IMHO, so, rather startlingly, I'm finished! Photos forthcoming. Also finished a quickie Henrican coif but am still trying to figure out just where it's supposed to sit on my head so it looks less like a 19th century bonnet.

I've been listening to a lot more music lately, even at work - which is unusual because music is so emotionally intense for me that it's hard to ignore the urge to dance (or, at least, bob my head vigorously). In addition to random YouTubery I've discovered 808 State reissues and am reminded how long it's been since I bothered to keep up, even with bands I already know I like! To that end I'm indulging in my backlog of SolipsisticNation podcasts, in the hopes that I might be an old crustie, but at least one who has an idea of what year it is :P

Had a nice, messy, colorful dream last night.

I was in an art studio with a lot of other people and the project was to paint huge white sheets of something (paper? fabric?)

I was on a budget so I got a special package of only 8 tubes of paint (everyone else had ~20) and started glopping it on. The "yellow" paint turned out to be orange with green and gold glitter; the brown was really dark red with silver flaking. I can't remember the other colors.

I slathered it several layers deep with a paint knife and then kept layering it on, but it didn't get nice crusty texture like acrylic paints, it just keep sinking into the surface.

No great meaning to this dream, except it reminded me of how fun it is to paint. It's not as if I ever developed great talent, but man, it feels good to get a canvas and just start piling on color!

Yesterday I took a "use or lose" day off and hit some local museums with [livejournal.com profile] skill_grl.

Having spent so much time on Metro this past weekend, I saw a lot of the Smithsonian's ads for exhibits. Would anyone be interested in Style and Status: Imperial Costumes from Ottoman Turkey (ends 1/22) and/or Dada (2/19 — 5/14)?
