I slept until almost 2 pm today.

Let me back up/explain:

Spent a delightful Saturday at the con. Upon arrival I discovered that I was on a panel about costuming called "Where's the Drag?" Bit of a surprise; though I'd volunteered no one had gotten back to me about it. This wasn't much of a problem because Gaylaxicon (or at least this one - it was my first) is a small/informal event, and the tracks are less about experts "holding forth from a pedestal" as it is about conversation with aforesaid experts (does that make me one?).

I wasn't alone up there - I shared moderation with two gentlemen (one dressed as an X-Wing pilot and another in something thrown together - I was in civvies 'cos I was advised that this wasn't much of a costuming event!) I think it went well - everyone seemed to have fun and have something to say once we drew them out!

Despite spending the day with a lot of literary type folks, my own narrative is deteriorating - I had a cold yesterday, go-go-going all day yesterday made it worse, and I'm not really stringing thoughts together all that well. I did stay for the dinner and awards ceremony - Best Novel went to the debut novel of an author who was speechless to have won - and chatted with a fellow CostumeCon person who turns out to be local/have met Janet Arnold in real life (hence yesterday's awed Twit). I was going to stay for the dance but a drill-like headache started taking hold around 9 so I pooped out.

And slept until 2 today :/ I suppose I needed it but it does mean that the day was pretty much a wash. We did make it out to my friend K.'s wedding at 4 but in the interest of not getting worse/not infecting the bridal party and guests, we didn't stay for the reception :(

So - it was good, but could have been a lot better if I'd started out with good health.

I DID pick up a lot of books, mostly smut (because I'll spend $ on books I know I can't get at the library) and got recommendations for many more, including some fashion-themed mysteries that sounded like they might be perfect for my Mom. Also picked up Vellum and it's sequel Ink to read on the loooong plane trip I've got coming up.

Off to stretch 'cos I didn't yesterday and it's not good to slack. I also haven't fenced since Wednesday, which causes me to grind my teeth.

The cold still lingers. It never got awful but the lingering stuffiness is slowing me down.

Tomorrow I'm going out to Gaylaxicon for the day, taking medicine with and seeing how long I last, as most of the discussions I want to hear/participate in are tomorrow. If all goes well I hope to do part of Sunday there as well and attend my friend K.'s wedding in the afternoon (last bit is non-negotiable). Monday is a holiday so I'll recupe then (and [flinch] rewire a blade).

I hate being sick. I'm being redundant but it's true. I may be a total lightweight but being even mildly under the weather REALLY crimps my style!

Busy weekend:

Saturday was Faire. I'd dithered about going because of the threat of rain, but the sky looked ok when I got up, so....

dress up for adults! )

fencing foo in which I do not suck :) )

Was able to do both of these things because I got my car to the mechanic Monday and they replaced my muffler/exhaust pipe (yes! I guessed right!) in one day.

For the week ahead: enjoying the calm before the storm of quarterly reports on Weds. Trying to tie up loose ends (and start some new ones) in the Florentine Trip Planning. Laundry. Managing feline diet. Foot exercises. Recovery.

Not sure when I'm going yet.

This isn't a plea for suggestions, just a comment that with the seemingly endless variety of weekend activities this fall, I really don't know yet, though there are a number of people I'd like to see there.

Likely I'll post here/elsewhere a few days before I go to figure out who will be around and coordinate from there.

Unless it's blazing hot I'll likely be in garb.

Via [livejournal.com profile] geekchick:

"For the past decade, a small group of rare book experts has sought to re-create Jefferson's library, scouring antiquarian book collections on two continents to acquire thousands of volumes. The entire collection of more than 6,000 volumes -- some originals and some replacements -- will go on display tomorrow at the Library of Congress, looking much as it would have 200 years ago."

Might have to drag myself out to see this!

Perhaps not news to half the people reading this, but news to me: Costume Con 2009 is going to be in my neck of the woods (PDF)! Good news for me as I'd fallen out of the CC loop after not being able to go for a couple of years; having it in my own backyard means I have no excuse not to go in a couple of years.

Given that CC welcomes space cadets, living history afficionados [sic], reenactors, textile designers, theater designers, fursuiters, mascots, cosplayers, fantasy costumers, costume professionals and folks who just like to dress up, I know some of y'all reading who may not have been to one might want to.

There's a photo archive of all past competition entries and winners at the main site - I double-dog dare all of ya to try and find me in there ;)

Disclaimer: not affiliated with production, just a very satisfied past attendee :)

My inner geek's just gotta see this before it's gone. I'll likely try to combine it with a visit to the rest of the library to look at some Jamestown docs.

Also want to go here and get my hot little hands/photocopier on this.

Yes, this note is mostly a reminder for myself :P

Just some observations based on the recent fighter practices and related mailing lists:

  • Fighter practice ain't just for fighting, or at least not locally. The one I visited over the summer includes dance practice and there is now discussion of setting aside a hallway for informal sewing lessons. Coming out of clubs where the entire focus is on the sport/martial art, I find this kind of odd but refreshing - it gives people who want to be supportive but who aren't necessarily into swords something(s) to do. Besides, if there's a space, might as well use all of it.
    • This seems to be planned for the new local practice as well, though there haven't been enough people to fight let alone do other stuff (thus far?) I've brought in the Mary Rose book for people to look through, and I'll likely bring in other books if there's interest.

  • One of the local heavy fighters takes his persona development fairly seriously, building a back story for his name and even developing a "secondary persona" for some of his other interests. I've met a few SCAdians who really get into the acting/character development aspects (rather like creating a character for an RPG?) but not often so that's kind of novel for me.
    • Said fighter has offered to help me figure out my own persona, which is kind but I'm not there yet - I'm not even as far as a name yet. I figure when I do it will likely be something like [period version of my first name] of [tempting to pick a variation of "Maupin" or "Alatriste", but let's face it, "Quixote" would probably be more fitting :P]

Note to my introverted self: if you can't make small talk, ask questions and then just listen.

Not a self-admonishment, because I did exactly this at a party this evening - I get to hear interesting things and don't make an ass of myself trying to make conversation that I'm not wired for.

Also got to decorate a sugar skull and eat chocolate brownies and cookies with chili :)

Spent the weekend on a fast/furious 2-day history-gasm at Williamsburg and Jamestown with the divine [livejournal.com profile] shemhazai. Things discovered: incredibly fine 18th century tailoring, how NOT to fire a musket, masts on a ship can move (!) and just how close one can get to an archaeological site. Also - parrying daggers!

More later, but I HAVE to emphasize - the weather was absolutely ideal, and the off-season rocks! It is criminal that I didn't drag my procrastinating carcass out before now, and this *will* be the first of many more trips!

Special thanks to new CSA buddy E. for helping us to prioritize Williamsburg and showing us how it "goes".

No, I DIDN'T dress, but it's just as well - it was very hot and very dusty. I am still sneezing/tearing/coughing black gunk. Will someone please tell the weather fairies that it's October already? I was so wiped by the time I got home that I ate and crashed early... and woke up at 3 am craving water after being in the heat all day. Note to self: beer is counterintuitive in hot weather, no matter how wet or watery it is :P

Ok, venting part over - mostly it was a grand day out. I got to see my friend C. for her birthday along with her dude A. We ran all over faire with my old college buddy J. and his new girl (YAY! He needed to meet a nice girl!) and further finally encountered [livejournal.com profile] vree, [livejournal.com profile] skill_grl, [livejournal.com profile] dreamtigress and company for Vree's birthday!

I did a number of things I don't usually do at Faire: I finally saw the jousting after several years of always managing to miss it. I'm always impressed but such a close partnership of human and horse for a common objective - running a lance through a ring is one thing on one's own, but when you're having to closely collaborate with another species to do it? That's a different kind of accomplishment, IMHO.

At J.'s request, we also sat still long enough to take in some of the music. In the past I've focused on theater and shopping, overlooking the music at faire as window-dressing instead of an event on it's own, which is a damn mistake because the bands are very good and quite funny - they joke with the audience so it's not like they're on a pedestal up and away.

D. and I danced energetically with the former to the last song of the night - two drummers = stomping beat = good for dancing. Good vibe too, and creative - who knew belly-dancing to bagpipes would work so well? The people watching was most excellent, with pretty alternapeople of most sexes representing :)

I also, conspicuously, didn't shop - normally I come away with some knick-knacky thing I never look at or jewelry I never wear, but I behaved. Sure, I window shopped and picked up cards, but no impulse buying, so I'm chalking that up as a "win".

I've come to the simultaneous conclusions that taking I'm my garb too seriously (especially for renaissance faires, where accuracy is an afterthought) AND that I am on the right track in creating a base "wardrobe" of garb that I can wear comfortably (and sweat in!). I asked a regular of this particular event how she survives the hot weather and her advice was: natural fibers and "suffer" - and oh yeah, men's gear is easier to move in and "more fun" :P

So, gotta get swingin' on a doublet with removable sleeves, but not before completing what I've already got going: [livejournal.com profile] shemhazai's NoNewSoMo (finish all unfinished projects) idea is a good one, so I'm off to stitch a bit on that smock!

It was a whirlwind:

Saturday: native dresses, white linen and a spike in my spine )

Sunday: team fencing, cookies, and a spike in my arm )

I sit at the screen finishing up the side seams on my smock and debating whether to iron them flat or just go to bed. Looking at the clock I'm guessing the latter is a better bet :P

Yep, those baptistry doors. At the Met, 10/30-1/13/2008.

It's only a 4 hour drive from here. Possible? Perhaps.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ellid for the tip.

Some odds and ends that I forgot about:

D. and I went to see the Great Britons exhibit last weekend. I wanted to go particularly for the Elizabeth I "Ditchley" portrait and was not disappointed. My mind's eye always thinks that the famous portraits I see in books are going to be about the same size as a rock star poster (~2'x3'); it's some sort of hangover from my childhood. In reality, the Ditchley portrait is nearly life size and full of pearls, puffs and other rich detail that just isn't captured in a book. Indeed, all of the paintings (including several others that I knew of but had never seen in person) gave more than anything on a printed piece of paper.

D. enjoyed it as well - he knows little of art history but when put in an exhibit he readily identifies what he likes and why. So that was a nice little outing.

I finally broke down and admitted the truth: footwear has a huge impact on fencing style, so I got a pair of fencing sneakers. The difference is remarkable - crosstrainer soles felt like I was dragging wedges of foam by comparison, and I feel noticeably more surefooted. I didn't get the Super Expensive Olympic Quality(TM) shoe but I'm still taking care of these - they only come out at club.

Now I'm looking at getting a pair cheapie leather soled shoes (ballet slippers, most likely) as some of those rapier pivoting movements just won't work in rubber soles (many thoughts re: historic movement and the effect of clothing thereon, but that will be another time).

D. got me some pretty jewelry for our anniversary, which he did not need to do but that I am grateful for just the same. Over the past few years my style has become increasingly "wash and wear" but I still lurve a little shiny, feminine thing here and there. One of these is a peridot bracelet - not a color I'd have chosen for myself, but the fresh light green ... my eye likes.

Indeed, I've started looking a bit shabby, IMHO, because I'm so reluctant to throw out what still fits (even if I don't like it anymore) and even more reluctant to buy new clothes - I'm such a snob about fit and it seems like such an extravagance, and most summer fashions aren't appropriate for my needs anyway, and... maybe I'm just rationalizing. I'm debating whether to go out (budget) shopping tomorrow.

Found (astoundingly) a local street style blog and the good news that black denim is back in style, though the ex-pseudo-goth in me wonders if it ever really went out....

university

Went to the local SCA university today.

The Good: Part of my reason to go to the event was to try and meet more people to do historic fencing with - as reported earlier, I thought I might have misjudged the nature of fencing within the organization.

Well, I was right! Turns out there is serious historic scholarship, but it's governed by the arts and sciences "department" rather than with competitive combat - evidently drills and demonstrations don't fall under the same rules as free fencing where winning is the goal. So, yes, I've found some more people playing the game I want to play, and I know where to find them too. Very cool :)

I also attended a class for newcomers that gave me some insight into the royalty hierarchy and who to curtsey to and when, and was reminded again that manners matter - sometimes just being there is being supportive, and sometimes one just has to shut up and be gracious. Given that I'm often uneasy in new situations, it helps me to have what I can do to be polite and help and how to address people spelled out for me.

Tangential to the class, I was reminded again what an overall generous organization the SCA is - people eager to share knowledge, answer questions, share food, water, space, etc. There are some good people there :)

I also stepped out of my usual interests and took a couple of dance classes - one on classes for multiple dancers, and one on fighting/flirting with dance. This worked out well because 1) it's a good workout, and 2) again with being shy, show me something to do in a social situation and I'm less stressed by not being able to find things to say :P Didn't do much fighting or flirting because I was busy watching my feet, but evidently I did ok my first time out.

[livejournal.com profile] orangesophie, on the other hand, flirted like mad and danced very well ;) She was funny as hell!

It was my friend C.'s first SCA anything, and though she was tired by the end I think she had a good time, especially the dance and medical/surgeon/physick classes. I hope she sticks with it if it struck her fancy.

The Bad: I thought the venue would be air conditioned and, as such, wore my doublet/breeches fencing kit (pockets! And I wanted to wear my new swank duds). Er.... no. Which brings me to:

The Ugly: Always Cold Me was damp flushed and rumpled by the end of the day, as was everyone else. There was temperature control, but not enough to warrant wearing 3 layers of long sleeved canvas :P The people in Greek garb clearly have the right idea for summer events!

So, I'm going to spend the evening swilling water like there's no tomorrow. Because I'm getting up for (modern) fencing practice tomorrow morning....

Yesterday D. and I went on a "date" - dinner and a movie. Movie: Spiderman III; dinner: Thai Farm. Reviews of both: good :)

snipped for possible Spiderman III spoilage )

Neither of us had been to the restaurant but had passed it multiple times and decided to give it a whirl. Good interior ambience and I admit I wasn't adventurous with my order (Thai fried rice with seafood), but D. commented on how fresh his was, and perhaps we will go again :)

Given that there are so many good restaurants nearby we're toying with the idea of eating a swath through the nearby "sit down" restaurants we ignored when D. wasn't working. Slowly, of course, but surely :)

No, really - I missed this exhibit when it traveled north of here as "Body Worlds" and I'm not going to miss it a second time!

Anyone wanna go see some (plastinated) dead bodies this summer?

This weekend was the first chance I've had to catch my breath all month. It was good :)

Some social stuff went on: [livejournal.com profile] geekchick's birthday at the Multimeat Palace was fun and tasty (mmm, dead animal!), meeting new people and catching up with some I've not seen in a loooong time :)

This morning was Indian buffet with former co-worker E. and his fiancee C. - haha, I've found another Miyake fan!! And ate a metric buttload of Indian food (butter chicken, mmmmm).

Such culinary adventures on a recovering stomach = I am officially never going to eat again, at least not until I get really, really hungry :P

I fell asleep on the sofa reading as I'm making a deliberate effort to read the books I've got in hand.

reading )

Crawling along on the tuxedo pants. I hand sewed the waistband and lining while watching multiple episodes of "Mythbusters" (which featured in turn, the tree cannon, the chicken cannon, and the drainpipe human cannon). Maybe it's the lack of challenge, but I've been too lazy to actually put them on and start hemming (besides, televisual cannons, woohoo!)

One buttonhole. One phone call. One careful line of prose....

I may be slow, but I get there in the end.

This fact will not stop my lamenting that there aren't more hours in a day.
