Just some observations based on the recent fighter practices and related mailing lists:

  • Fighter practice ain't just for fighting, or at least not locally. The one I visited over the summer includes dance practice and there is now discussion of setting aside a hallway for informal sewing lessons. Coming out of clubs where the entire focus is on the sport/martial art, I find this kind of odd but refreshing - it gives people who want to be supportive but who aren't necessarily into swords something(s) to do. Besides, if there's a space, might as well use all of it.
    • This seems to be planned for the new local practice as well, though there haven't been enough people to fight let alone do other stuff (thus far?) I've brought in the Mary Rose book for people to look through, and I'll likely bring in other books if there's interest.

  • One of the local heavy fighters takes his persona development fairly seriously, building a back story for his name and even developing a "secondary persona" for some of his other interests. I've met a few SCAdians who really get into the acting/character development aspects (rather like creating a character for an RPG?) but not often so that's kind of novel for me.
    • Said fighter has offered to help me figure out my own persona, which is kind but I'm not there yet - I'm not even as far as a name yet. I figure when I do it will likely be something like [period version of my first name] of [tempting to pick a variation of "Maupin" or "Alatriste", but let's face it, "Quixote" would probably be more fitting :P]

Fighter practice also being a stitch 'n bitch, garb workshop, and general socialization night is very, very common. I don't go to mine anymore because it's indoors and I can't hear over the clacking of rattan on rattan, but many groups use it as the informal "let's all get together and have fun" night.

Which group are you in? I know some people in Atlantia....

I'm in Roxbury Mill, but the metro area is so densely populated that I keep an eye on Ponte Alto and Storvik stuff occasionally as well.

Roxbury Mill? That's where [livejournal.com profile] ladyaelfwynn lives! Small world, no? I don't know anyone in Ponte Alto or Storvik, but I hear good things about them. I've only been to Atlantia once, but it seems like a comfortable place.

And if you ever get to Pennsic which you must you'd have such a blast, my Barony, Bergental, camps near Stierbach. We freeze, we burn, we drown, we cope with tornadoes, we're up our ankles in mud, we breathe dust, we're too hot, we're too cold...and we come back year after year because we love it.
