movie weekend

With all the going and doing, this is the first weekend D. and I have had free to catch up on quality early-summer blockbusters, and rewatch some old favorites. Spoilerage abounds:
The action snagged from the first frame and there was humor, angst, and things blowing up, all of which were paced nicely into a coherent narrative that reboots the franchise without trashing everything that came before. Kirk was appropriately arrogant and Spock subtly stoic, but I really wanted to see more of Simon Pegg (Scotty). Then again, I'm biased, Pegg can make brushing his teeth hilarious :P
We will be seeing this in Imax.
I wish I could say something better about this movie. It showed lots of Hugh Jackman skin, so "yay" if you're into that ;) but that was the best bit - the characters were not compelling, the story poorly paced. The worst thing they did was mute Deadpool - Ryan Reynolds does snarky motormouth EXTREMELY well, which suits, but both character and actor were wasted here.
I forgot how achingly beautiful this movie is! If ancient China were this gorgeous I'd beg to move in, do calligraphy, and deflect arrows with flying martial arts in my spare time [sigh]
Mostly wanted to watch this because of the display in the theater for the sequel and it really is a funny little movie. I especially love the fetch-playing T-Rex fossil :P
