Because this is tangentially related...

I've really been enjoying the whole process of the Edwardian walking dress. The last time I did something that complicated was probably my sister's wedding dress (Italianate Tudor).

Everything from the scribbled sketches, to the detailed viewings of "Fool For Love" to try and capture the pertinent details, to the actual construction.

I studied to do this for real in school. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday and I would spend a whole year planning outfits. I took all the classes and worked in the costume shop, so that when I graduated I would have experience to go be a costumer.

Only by the time that happened, I realized the job didn't pay and that I'd have to work with both actors and directors both of whom I hated by then. Actors were idiots that couldn't do what we told them or read the labels on dangerous chemicals. Directors made crazy design choices that ignored my artistic aesthetic.

I hadn't stopped wanting to make outfits just realized that if I went into that as a profession I'd've either been institutionalized (asylum or state pen ;-p) or dead of ulcers by now.

I really wish there was a way to create all the really beautiful outfits that are in my head. But, I've no place to wear them and I won't sew for money. I've done that in the past and it makes me crazy. I don't have the bitchy streak to actually demand payment.

But, there are so many outfits that want to get out!

I echo your sentiments wholeheartedly WRT why I don't costume for money (http://anotheranon.livejournal.com/248255.html). I am also REALLY hearing you re: wanting to make so many things! I'm embarrassed at how LITTLE I'll be taking to Costume Con!
