Joy Division, hands down.

Not sure how I first found out about them - either one of my suburban goth/indie/weird friends discovered that New Order had a previous incarnation or I did myself in my teenage musical meanderings. In any event, I came for the "ancestor of New Order" and the tragic rock-star mystique (morose artist self-destructs at peak of creativity [YouTube]) but stayed for the deep, brooding melodies. Even after all these years, the more I listen, the more there is to hear.

Favorite track? "Atmosphere":

I'm not a fanatical purist about much, but IMHO this track should never be covered by ANYONE. You can sample "Love Will Tear Us Apart" until the cows come home, but leave me my glittering synth!

I got the best of New Order for one of the winter present opportunities and really liked them. I can also hear a stylistic similarity to Depeche Mode.

The video was rather striking.

I wasn't able to get into this stuff when it was popular the first time, as I was living in a cultural backwater. I'm totally enjoying now, at a time when I really don't care if my friends like my music.

IIRC Mode and New Order came about at around the same time (early 1980s). Joy Division isn't COMPLETELY different from New Order, but the latter was and is much more dancefloor oriented ("Blue Monday" is like the "little black dress" of any record collection - appropriate everywhere!) I actually prefer JD over NO, but that may just be me.

I'm glad you're finding the music that you like!
