I did make it out to 12th night Saturday. It was my first one, and it was pretty cool :)

[livejournal.com profile] ladyaelfwynn and I carpooled down - much fun conversation ensued :) She's about the only person from my shire that I know outside the "unpractice" folks, but I am starting to know a few names and recognize faces from the larger metro area.

I think this is probably the biggest SCA event I've been to thus far, probably larger than the universities I've been to. It's also (I think) one of the only winter events I've been to.

Indoor + cold weather = this is clearly the place to wear the fancy stuff :) And many people were dressed spectacularly! Not sure whether it was a Tudor/Elizabethan theme or just an excuse to go all out, but I gathered from the dressing room chat (and a dressing room was needed - you can't get in and out of Full Court Press on your own) that many of the attendees don't usually dress like this. You'd never know it - there were many walking around who looked liked they'd stepped out of portraits (I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] belfebe!)

I was pleased and perhaps most surprised to see [livejournal.com profile] orangesophie, though I shouldn't have been - she's local and her man, though not, is a seneschal(?) so it makes sense they'd make the biggest event of the season. I'm pleased to report she's doing well and has a posh orange cape! She also took me along to Lion and Lily's performance - quite beautiful.

A lot of the event revolved around court, which involved the giving of awards and recognition for service, research, creative works, and feats of arms, as near as I can tell. This was the first time I'd gone to court and while I quite enjoyed seeing people get their awards I'm not sure I fully appreciate the significance of it because I'm just not that "plugged in" to the SCA hierarchy and orders. Still though, more pretty dresses and a chance to rest my feet!

I wore my blue kirtle, red sleeves, finally-finished fitted gown (sewed in the last hook/eye Thurs. night) and a wired coif. The last two were being "piloted" as I'd never worn them anywhere before and I have to say - I was mostly comfortable. Certainly I wasn't freezing! The forehead cloth I used to disguise my anachronistic hair pinched my ears a bit, but can easily be fixed.

There was an amateur photographer set up in one of the rooms; evidently he shows up at SCA events to practice portraiture, free of charge - you just leave your name/contact info and he sends along a disc when he's tidied everything up. I posed for a picture using my best Dour Tudor Lady(TM) expression :P Don't know when I'll get it but I'll post it when I do.

'nuff for now - gotta go fold my everyday clothes that got short shrift while I was out all day Sat.
