In answer to [livejournal.com profile] lady_masque and [livejournal.com profile] fencerchica but posting to all 'cos you never know who might be interested:

The notes for the SCA demo I went to a couple of weeks ago are now online.

Also IIRC, the instructor mentioned that he usually tries to present something at the local Kingdom universities. The next one is the first weekend of October but no classes are posted yet - might want to check back later. The name you're looking for is Dante di Pietro.

The SCA requires attendees of their events to make a "reasonable attempt" at pre 17th c. clothing; their extensive newcomer's links can help you figure it out if you decide to attend.

Thanks! It's very interesting reading. The perspective and emphasis certainly is quite different from sport epee, where distance and tempo are the most vital concepts.

Coincidentally, I just got back from Nationals in San Jose last night. My fencing was basically solidly average for my D rating, so I'm not beating myself up too bad but I'm also pondering hard on the many lessons learned. :-7

Storvik is having an upcoming novice tourney that my girlfriend and I are planning to check out. I think I'll just be a spectator for the rapier, as she probably will be for the heavy, but we're going to enter two of our homebrews in the novice brewer competition! :-)

Historic rapier IS different from any of the modern weapons - it's a lot bigger, slower, and more deliberate. IMHO this is a good thing because my foil and rapier techniques aren't likely to cross-contaminate.

Have fun at the tourney! If it's the one this weekend, tell Davitt from Storvik practice hi from me! And if you run into Lady Aelfwynn of Whitby ([livejournal.com profile] ladyaelfwynn) you might want to talk brewing/cooking shop with her - she's good people :)
