Hot. Damn hot, real hot, now with extra humidity! I think it's fair to say that if this is bugging me, I must finally have acclimated after all these years :P

First off was a localish SCA event that promised a historic fencing demo/class and the presence of some people I knew online and off.

I got lost and was a bit late for the fencing demo, but did catch enough to remind me yet again that there are a few hardcore sword historians in the SCA, who know what they're doing and are eager to share :)

I also got to watch one of my Weds. practice buddies go through SCA rapier authorization and see how that worked, as well as wave "hi" to [livejournal.com profile] belfebe.

Notes to self: if there's a way to do Elizabethan comfortably in a mid-Atlantic summer, I've not found it. At least industrial strength sunscreen lives up to it's promises and I didn't burn in addition to baking :P Even wearing all natural fibers and no doublet I was pretty miserable. The people running around in Greek and Japanese had the right idea, IMHO!

So did the arts and science people, who were in a the main air-conditioned building. I finally got to meet [livejournal.com profile] ladyaelfwynn and we chatted on subjects large and small and ate some fantastic food - SCA events always seem to have great food, and lots of it, Aelfwynn and her friends did a fantastic job!

I had been planning to leave, but stayed a bit more for conversation and a silk knotting/beading class.

Observations: I'm still a bit surprised at how generous the SCA folks are, though I shouldn't be - this is a group that loves to do and show and tell. I think that's the big difference between them and average Renn faire-going - the latter is more entertainment, the SCA is more participatory.

There's also a lot for kids to do at events, and IMHO it's a great place for people with children. Kids aren't treated like little adults but they aren't hovered over like fine china or treated like idiots either, so they wind up having a lot of autonomy. Besides, all the adults are looking out for them :)

I'm still finding my way, but speak enough SCA now to know that Pearls have earned their congrats and Pelicans make it all go 'round. The peerage hierarchy is still a bit of a mystery. Time.

After changing clothes and quick go-over with wet wipes, I went over to [livejournal.com profile] orangesophie's for her crafty birthday party to catch up (I'd not seen her in a year!) and make sock puppets (the real kind :P) Something to work on helped me stay awake as I was pretty wilted, and I still wimped out early, but it was good to see her and her dude S. again.

[livejournal.com profile] dotheranon's reward to himself for CISSPdom is a new high-def, wide screen tv - this thing is posh! We've been watching LOTR, Underworld, and other slickly produced things just to see the shiny, and have been muchly impressed. Me, I'm thinking the Olympic fencing is going to look just faaaabulous...

Speaking of which, another morning of suiting up and sweating for fun and.. well, fun :P My feet continue to improve though I foolishly forgot to take Ibuprofen before practice. Visiting/new(?) person outright bounces.

High if cautious hopes for the movie - high because Angelina Jolie, w00t!, cautious because the original comic made out the "heroes" to be so racist/misogynistic that I didn't bother to finish it. The movie did away with the latter but was so loosely based on the original that they dumped the superpower/alternative world storylines too.

I actually found James McAvoy's freaked out accountant funny and in his freaked-outedness, but poor Angelina had little to do when she wasn't shooting things (and she needs a pork chop and a bowl of grits, desperately). Fun action flick but don't expect it to stick to the original; it's more of a "wage slave sticks it to the man" story.

I'm still rehydrating/tired from the weekend and catching up on laundry/web work/sundries. Going to drink water now....

Thanks for the rundown :) This adds to my SCA "vocabulary" substantially!

What is a patent/grant of arms? Does this mean coat of arms, or that the A&S award has some sort of fighting award built in for non fighters- ?

Well, it is actually heraldic language for higher awards. Patent trumps Grant, which trumps award. It has nothing to do with weapons or fighting, although it is somehow related to a "coat" or arms, which we call a device.

People can register a device (which is like a coat of arms), even if they have not been awarded "arms." That's why it is called a device, and after you are awarded arms (or higher), they can be called arms. It is not fighting language, but heraldic, which in some historical way was related to arms. I hope it makes sense. :-)

Here is another link that will hopefully help you. It is the Atlantian Order of Precedence, which has a link to the list of awards and what each one is for.

Since you're pretty close to the East, here are the Eastern equivalents. Note that we only have one level of kingdom recognition between AoA and peerage, not two:

A&S: Order of the Maunche
Service: Order of the Silver Crescent
Heavy weapons: Order of the Tygers Combatant
Fencing: Order of the Golden Rapier
Archery: Order of the Sagittarius
Youth Combat: Order of Gawain

The peerages are the same. I'm a Maunche and a Laurel, both for my work in (surprise!) medieval quilting. I *think* I'm the only quilting Laurel in the Society but am not 100% sure.

My icon shows my device, which I registered only a few years ago. The consulting herald at Pennsic was shocked to see that no one had grabbed it yet even though it's fairly simply.
