(no subject)
May. 2nd, 2002 10:36 pmIn cleaning up the guest room (yes still at it), I happened across this book in the chest of drawers. I removed it in the interest of not scaring my parents when they put their luggage away - it's an interesting, creative book but even I find some of the items startling.
It's always a question when family visits - how much do I censor for their benefit and how much do I just "be myself", damn the consequences? It's a carryover from high school/college, when I couldn't talk to them about anything they considered a sensitive subject - controversy would create too much hell and I still had to live with these people.
I'm at the point now where I'm not going to be confrontational, but if they run across something they find questionable I'm not going to get defensive either, just forthcoming. It's not like I'm all that weird anyway, but I do have books of pierced/corseted people on my shelves and DVDs that could concievably provoke the "what is that about?" response. The fact that I'm an adult and my quirks/kinks are not their business is also worth consideration.
Truth be told, it is more likely that they'll want to talk, play with the cats, and maybe go to a museum or something, and the awkward "running across things" won't even happen.
As it is, I finally got a class listing from Costume College today, hurrah! Need to pick & reserve for the limited attendance classes extremely soon.
