I'm going to Florence in November!

I'm excited but intimidated. I mean, look at the brains that are going to be on display! I feel like I've got to do a pile of homework in preparation, but at least it's the fun, fascinating kind.

I'm also attempting to brush off my very rusty college Italian by listening to podcasts; though I joke that all I really need remember is "espresso" and "Uffizi" I suspect a little more than that might be helpful :P

Grazie, prego, and sono Americana, parle Inglese, per piacere? are also useful...

But the most valuable word of all? GELATO. Remember this and you'll be fine! :)

Your mention of language brush-up sent me scramblng for my copy of Stephen Fry's "Rescuing the Spectacled Bear" because I saw something about the best language course (in his opinion) in existence while flipping through it looking for something else half-remembered.

Mr. Fry recommends language learning recordings by a chap named Michael Thomas: "... he has a unique and perfectly brilliant way of teaching languages. He can more or less guarantee to have you in command of a thousand word vocabulary in a week or ten days. No homework, absolutely no writing down: you just listen." With that kind of recommendation, might be worth checking into. :-)

Thanks for the language recommendation! I'm going to look around for this (used) if I can...

You're very welcome and I hope you have luck in the hunt. (you can also congratulate yourself on perfect LJ post timing, as my page flipping was just last night and so fresh in the ol' memory)
