Sweeney Todd
Dec. 24th, 2007 09:19 pmSaw the movie. Disclaimer: I have no familiarity with the stage production, music, or any of Sondheim's other work.
Predictions on it's effect on the wider pop culture/fandom (no spoilers):
Yes, I'm snarking, but seriously, I loved the gleeful morbidness. It was very Tim Burton, and very Depp/Bonham Carter (the ideal gothic "it" couple). I liked.
Predictions on it's effect on the wider pop culture/fandom (no spoilers):
- This film will inspire a thousand Costume Con/con costume masquerade entries.
- At last - beachwear for Goths!
- Sweeney Todd/Judge Turpin slash will afflict the fandoms like a disease.
- Ditto breathless Mary Sues held at razor point by Johnny Depp.
- The razors will be made into mountable props, rather like the swords from LOTR and the like.
- Tim Burton has a secret herd of wide-eyed, rosebud-lipped supporting actors - the young lovers in all of his films are just so damn pouty I've gotta believe he's cloning Christina Ricci somewhere...

(and keep an eye out for the original Broadway cast recording, with Lansbury and Len Cariou too ... there's a rather odd song on it that had been cut from the stage show by the time it was filmed ... the judge sings it as he flagellates himself while spying through Johanna's keyhole to watching her dressing/undressing)
