badmagic has some interesting conversations going on about direct asking vs. hinting here and here - are you an Asker or a Hinter, or some combination depending on context?

I think he and his commenters spoke to some stuff I've had on my mind about my difficulty reading "between the lines" and sometimes embarrassing literalism, but have not been able to hammer out into anything coherent. Good reading.

I'm totally a hinter and poker, and it's given me a bit of grief over the years. I guess there may be a perfect balance between the two that i would need to find...

I think I'm an Asker raised to be a Hinter and not really good at either :P I suspect there are times/places/situations in which one or the other is more appropriate, but I am still figuring this out as I go along.
