Pirate Spank Inferno*

In my imagination, it wasn't too hard for the directors/producers/whoever of "Pirates of the Caribbean III" to convince Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Chow-Yun Fat and everyone else to drop more serious projects in order to make this movie: "Yeah, you are all talented actors who have done and can do again some Serious Drama(TM) and brainy art-like films - but how about spending a few months in the Bahamas with black gunk on your teeth and yelling "Arrrrrr!" a lot? We'll pay!"
I thought this movie was hysterical and I can't help but imagine that everyone making it had a lot of fun with their roles (if not with the black gunk). I think the Flying Dutchman and the Black Pearl were so ragged not from constant battle, but from the incredible amount of scenery chewed :P
High art, it ain't, nor was I expecting it to be.
It was incredibly over the top in both acting and effects. Sparrow was delightfully swishy (and now we know where he got it from), the East India rep (whose name I don't remember) appropriately stuffy and the action sequences slapped one on top of the other like layers of crusty paint - a wonderfully messy Pollock of a picture.
The costumes were fantastic (and I love that there was an entire unit dedicated to "dyeing and aging"), and none of the anachronisms bothered me because everything about the movie is an anachronism - hell, it's based on a theme park ride (and a lackluster one at that) and the Biggest Bad has a squid for a face and a crew made of barnacles - any fretting that Historically, Pirates Were Really Bad People, MMKay just kinda flies out the window :P
Loved the multiple Jacks - made it all sillier. Especially when he dropped his brain.
And yes, I stayed after the credits - very sweet, but I would rather have seen more bickering between Barbossa and Jack :P
Short version - fun and silly, and next time I need to veg out for a day or two I'm running all 3 back to back so I can point and laugh.
And oh yeah, I need a pirate coat.
*Yeah, I know the joke's worn thin but it still cracks me up :P
