Thanks to all for the discussion about the Pern books - didn't know it would get such a response! I've decided to finish "Dragonflight" (if the library will let me keep it that long) and then see what I think before dismissing the series as "not my thing".

Understandable if Pern isn't your thing ... I know there's a lot of series/authors out there that are highly popular that I just can't seem to get into, no matter how hard I try (I always read one book cover to cover, just so I can say I really tried ...)

The best way to read the Pern books is to put on whatever music you listened to when you were 13-14, pretend you're in 8th grade and still a virgin, and then read. It works. :p

Come to think of it, there was a ~14 year old girl I used to fence with who LUUUUURRRRVED McCaffrey's books :P

The further I go into "Dragonflight", the more I see where your recommendation might work...
