Yep, you read right...

At long last spring is trying to heat up. We've opened the windows (hurrah!) but not put on the A/C yet. I feel fine, but I'm not wearing a fur coat.

A useful loose gauge of temperature is the extent of small mammalian spread - the hotter it gets, the more surface area a housepet will attempt to air out, by stretching out as flat as possible. Normally mine (especially Kisia) adopt controlled catloaf postures, but this is them last night (via crappy cell phone camera):

Based on this I'm guessing an interior temperature of 75-80F. Once I see them doing this on linoleum or tile I'll know it's time to put on the A/C.

Additional: Cat Drinking Songs - lemme know if they're any good (no sound at home).

I like "catloaf", we usually call it the meatloaf pose but catloaf is much better. Ours are enjoying the open windows.

And then there's the ultimate, the "dead cat on its back pose," which my old Arrow was so good at that Roomie thought he *was* dead once. I wish I'd been there when she leaned down to touch him and he moved....

Our childhood cat excelled at this, going completely limp - scared my mom to death once!

After we figured out what was up, it was fun to put an ice cube on his tummy and see if he'd wake up as it melted (not usually - long haired cat) :P

*short*

The funny thing is I just called my sprawled cat a "Flat Cat" last night.
Elkor insisted he wasn't flat.
It seems I have back up to use the term now.

Is Kisia the all gray one? If so, it must be a genetic thing that they do "catloaf" so well. I swear our Miko would actually fit in a bread pan... if we could get her there without her scracthing our eyes out.

Kisia is the little gray girl - Miss Spice is the orange tabby.

Does Miko also happen to be a Russian Blue?

Part. She came from a litter of mixed cats. Her siblings were 1 all gray with a white tuxedo patch, 1 all black, and 1 black with a tuxedo patch. She was the only solid gray.

For my guinea pig Dandy I had a temperature chart, with drawings of his different poses, to help you read the "furmometer". Of course one of the poses was "Feed the thermometer!"
