glad I have my own fencing gear
Mar. 9th, 2007 06:48 pmMRSA: it's not just for hospitals anymore. In addition it turns out that sharing fencing gear (even body cords) is a way to get infected.
This is not to imply that the people I fence with are lepers or that the clubs I fence at are dirty, not at all, but ya never know. Being a sweaty mess isn't the only reason to have a hot, soapy shower as soon as I get home.
I think I will start washing my gear more often (lately it's been every 2-3 practices), and running a kitchen wipe or similar over the body cord though.

Date: 2007-03-10 04:15 pm (UTC)Makes perfect sense though; human sweat and skin oils are banquets for all kinds of micro-critters. The majority are harmless (and even help keep our skin in good condition), but when one of the "predators" lands on us, they oust the harmless ones and multiply like crazy (just like any other invasive species ... think rabbits in Australia, brown tree snakes in Guam, etc., etc.)
P.S. Thanks for the pointer for another reason ... I've been on the lookout for a U.S. equivalent to the Canadian "It's Your Health" site on my webpage and a little extra pokling 'round in here turned up the alphabetical listing I wanted! :-)
