Yanno, over the years I've wondered about this too! Fortunately, someone in the comments presented the most fully thought out and elaborate, yet completely logical explanation ever. Which reassures me that there are people in this world more obsessed with the details than I am :P

I like that explanation. It almost fits the R2D2 as Secret Jedi Master theory, while being a bit more practical. It also explains a whole lot about Chewie.

See, I ALWAYS knew there was more to Artoo than met the eye - when I saw at the end of RotS that he didn't get his memory erased along with Threepio's it cast the original trilogy in a whole new light - he knew all of the main players in the founding of the Rebellion and who Luke and Leia were from the beginning. No WAY he wasn't a covert agent!

I've never read the books. It's a conclusion drawn from watching the movie. Everything happens to Toto. He's the center of all the action, and he's always the principle actor who makes things happen to Dorothy. The Witch of the West suspects, but she's no match for his powers.
