My answer to question #1 is actually "It's your journal, so it's up to you" ... lacking that option, I voted "no" because I enjoy reading ALL your enthusiams and would hate to miss anything. :-)
I agree with JLS. No need to filter unless there's content you don't want out there for general consumption. Personally, I love to read about your fencing sessions. And if someone doesn't want to read, they can simply skip over it!
I always find it amazing when I read someone lj on something that I know absolutely nothing about. I used to be concerned that I was boring some of my friends with my occasional technical rants on programming and what have you. I even tried the filter thing at one point but eventually gave it up.
Lots of your friends want in anyway I'd say keep it. But then again, I actually READ it and post my own. Which reminds me, I need to post mine from last night. I SO need to drill with folks. My lack of precision is killing me.
And your usual route of putting it behind I cut I think is quite neat enough.
