Fenced at Yet Another Fencing Club last night.

Short version: brand new clean club, same fencers as the Other Fencing Club, so just as challenging as last week. Learned a bladework drill which reveals how Other Fencing Club (OFC) members are truly fast like freaks. The coach at YAFC was offering free promotional mini lessons, so I had one - I need to loosen up my shoulder in order to extend my lunge, because putting too much muscle into this particular activity means I'm working too hard.

And I did work HARD - I was there 2 1/2 hours. Note to [livejournal.com profile] zen4me and [livejournal.com profile] skill_grl: y'all were right, water does matter. I was able to go longer last night because I religiously took water breaks, downing about a liter and change during the course of the evening.

However, I must have burned unusually hard, because today I've really been hungry. This evening after dinner I sat down to sew/catch up on emails, and 9:30 rolls around and I'm ready to eat a whole cow! I can't of course, as I'll be up all night, but this means I'm burning calories, right?

*chuckles* of course we were right, we're goddesses of exercise :P

Seriously, glad you took the advice and drank more water, your body is thanking you for it and you will truly enjoy yourself more because you aren't dehydrated.

You still might want to look into some energy gels to take with you to fencing. Personally, I'd suggest Gu's banana or orange flavours but [livejournal.com profile] skill_grl probably has different suggestions on the Gu. For some real yum, pick up some shot bloks by clifshot. The black cherry is awesome, lemon lime tastes like kool-aid and the strawberry isn't too bad either. You'll be amazed at how much better you feel with a little extra fuel in you half-way through a training session plus the additional water.

Were you starving the day after you worked out, or when you got home? Your statement is a little confusing to me. Splain please?

I'll look into the energy gels, but I really don't like to eat when I'm in the middle of it all - even a little bit feels like it slows me down.

I was starving the day after I worked out, not when I got home. I woke up hungry!

Trust me, these won't slow you down or make you feel heavy, in fact you'll probably feel even better because of them. You're burning major calories and you have to replenish them regularly throughout an extended workout or your body goes into panic mode. If you aren't putting enough calories, salts and sugar back in your brain will start sucking them away from everything else as protection and you'll bonk. You soooooo don't want to bonk. Trust me on this, [livejournal.com profile] skill_grl and I have both done it, NOT FUN!

I think it's normal to be more hungry the next day after a major workout. Especially if your workout is in the evening as you don't have enough time to replace calories before going to sleep. Between the workout and sleeping your body is going to try and use up every spare calorie it can find, even if that means leeching it from your muscle tissue (not good!), what you might want to do is have a banana or protein bar before you hit the sack on those days to help your body during recovery overnight. I'd suggest speaking with a nutritionist on the best way to approach this, but you could probably get away with my suggestion above if you want. *mumbles something about not an expert, don't sue please* :)
