I think it's the sheer relentless persnickity scientific approach that takes it over the edge. I had half the co-workers mesmerized by this one lunch hour.

May be. The scientists ("scientists"?) rigor should have worn thin as a gag (intentional or not) but somehow it only increased the silly :P
