$110 (advance registration) + ? materials fee (pay at first class) = 12 1 hour intermediate foil group classes at Competitive Fencing Club

+

12 (for each of the weeks of class) x $5 (cost of floor fee, requested each week) = $60 for 12 weeks of free fencing at Competitive Club immediately following class.

= $170 + materials.

Pro:

  • One stop shop for both instruction and bouting/practicing what I've learned
  • Fence rated/new-to-me fencers
  • More time devoted to hobby

Con:

  • More expensive
  • More pressure to compete
  • Longer drive
  • More time devoted to hobby
  • Most of my good fencing buddies don't fence there during the regular sessions

OR

$97 (advance registration) + $25(?) materials (pay at first class) = ~$122 = 10 1 hour foil group classes OR 10 1 1/2 hour free fencing at Recreational Club.

= ~$122, depending on materials.

Pro:

  • Cheaper
  • Familiar - fencing buddies
  • Shorter drive
  • Recreational and friendly - no pressure to compete

Con:

  • Can either fence or get instruction, but not both
  • A. will be plenty disappointed that I defected to the Other Club
  • Familiar - have fenced almost everyone there

[Poll #785352]

Further relevant details: I really like fencing, and no matter what my budget has been I've found the $ to keep going. One of these is going to happen (I'm leaning towards the Competitive Club), I'm just tossing the poll out there to see if there's some other option I'm blind to because I'm single minded.

Objective: as ever, to get exercise, learn more, and be a better fencer.
