Very old news and probably common sense to anyone reading this, but after reading Salon's article about the latest assault on birth control (free day pass and all that), I was disturbed to find that the freaks who want to ban the Pill offer up natural family planning (NFP) as a reasonable alternative (!!)

I suppose if women did ovulate on a nice schedule it might work, but this NIEHS study indicates that most women don't - the potential for conception is definitely there outside of days 10-17. The Salon article also links to a study that suggests many women ovulate multiple times a month, giving NFP a failure rate of up to 25%. That's much too high to be acceptable to most women accustomed to the much higher efficacy of modern contraception (rates of other birth control methods from Planned Parenthood and the FDA).

Like I said - most of you probably already know this; you're all bright and the study is 6 years old, fer crissakes! - but I hate the idea of bad science getting currency. Forward around to those who might need it, and get pissed off at the religious nutcases trying to take your bodily autonomy away!

Wonder if any of these people have heard the old medical "joke" about the technical term for women practicing natural family planning/rhythm method being "mother". ***sigh***

Y'know I've just figured it out ... the reason that liberal attitudes/laws piss off the religious right so much is that they don't force people to do things they don't approve of/disagree with, therefore not adding enough misery to the world.

It galls me enough that the religious freaks in the article want to ban hormonal birth control; it's even MORE angering to me that they willfully spread disinformation about safety and efficacy of the same. It's medically irresponsible!

And yes - I'm not sure why social conservatives fret sooooo long and hard over what kinds of fun their neighbors might or might not be having and whether they should be punished for having it - must be a cruel god they believe in or something :(
