Via [livejournal.com profile] mazjan: we'd never see anything this obvious here. And yes, yes, I know - tampons aren't the healthiest thing to use, but at least this ad doesn't flinch about showing the feminine product being advertised :P

Sorry, must have missed that memo, but.... why aren't tampons healthy to use? *puzzled*

Most commercially made tampons in the States (can't speak for other countries, as I've never menstruated whilst abroad) contain rayon, which is TOO absorbent, unbalancing the delicate vaginal ecosystem and allowing the bacteria that causes toxic shock syndrome to flourish. There's also some concern about the substances used (unecessarily) to bleach the products pearly white - bleaches are generally a bad thing to put in a mucous membrane.

Having said this, a quick search for "tampon health" at Google didn't find me many sources that weren't biased in some way (most were either industry or anecdotal horror stories); I'm including this link (http://www.uvm.edu/~dos/chw/?Page=women.html#tampon) because I'm hoping the ".edu" on the end means that they're at least trying to be objective. I strongly suggest doing your own research and making up your own mind.

My take on tampons: I'll use them if I'm caught without my Keeper because I hate pads (personal comfort issue) but I don't leave them in long, or use one after the other anymore.

Okay... I understand what you mean.

I've never understood the "timing" method of using tampons, or the "leaving them in too long" method. Because I sweat alot, I have to drink a lot of liquids to avoid dehydration -- I'm French, and I sweat, what can I say? :p The effect of that is that I have to pee a lot, and because of that I've always changed my tampon everytime I go pee... which is about every hour or so. I've always been shocked to meet women who can leave tampons in for two or three hours, or even overnight -- I can't do it. Or -- and this one baffles me -- who can *pee* with a tampon in their vagina. I've never been able to do that either. So I guess the stories of bleaching and rayon and the like have not been something I've paid much attention to because I change tampons a lot. (I use Tampax regulars, btw.)

For a lot of people this might be a TMI, but I've always been fascinated with the huge range of variation in menstral cycles. I've kept detailed records of my cycle since 1991, as I had to go off the pill and didn't want to get pregnant.

No fear of TMI in this journal, at least about menstruation. Since I started again it's been of interest to me as well - if someone gets squicked, they're free to navigate away :P

Re: peeing and tampons, etc.: I used to wear one all day (say, 9-5) without incident, and yes, I could pee with one in. I also used to all night, though I admit that it was probably not a good idea in light of the dangers I mentioned upthread.

I haven't tried this since I restarted, just because I hate that "dried out" feeling from wearing one for hours on end (how's that for TMI?:P). As near as I can tell, every woman is wired up differently - tolerances and comforts are highly individual, and I can only say that we should all figure out what works for us and do that.

I also mark my period on my calendar, which I never used to do because I was on the pill for my entire sexually active life before Depo. I do it mostly to try and find patterns between it and any mood swings, cramping etc. that's going on as I "normalize".

I wouldn't ever wear a tampon that long! All day! Whoo! And the "dried out" feeling usually comes from wearing a too-large tampon. I've found the Tampax Juniors to be really good, but then I'm the sort that will go through three different sizes in one day. I also can't wear Kotex tampons -- I'm just not shaped in the right way to wear them. And I've never been able to wear OB's.

Yes, create a chart for yourself -- that's the best way to know what's coming up for yourself. I range from 20-26 days, with the mean being 26 days.

LOL! That IS cute!

Although, given a choice, I'd go for the pirate brand every time ... swashbuckling wins over cuteness any day. :-)

Yep, we have these ads, in large, all over Sweden. It sure looks damned cosy!
I have to disagree on the unhealty part though, we have the Ellen tampons, healty x 2 :) -> http://www.ellen.se/ -> loaded with neat milk acid bacterias. They work swell x 3.
