Lecture
“Women’s Fashions of the Civil War Era”

The slide-illustrated lecture will be presented by Linda R. Duffy, a specialist on women’s costumes and lifestyles during the mid-19th century. The lecture will survey all types of women’s dress, from undergarments to day and evening wear. Ms. Duffy will also examine the relationship between clothing styles, social status, and customs of the time. Attendees will also be able to view the exhibit, Off the Pages of Godey’s: A Guide to the Domestic Sciences, which features a variety of clothing articles, accessories, and fashion plates from the popular magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book from Ms. Duffy’s private collection.
The lecture will take place in the Fort Ward Museum Library.
Admission fee is $6 and reservations are recommended.
Fort Ward is the best preserved of the Union forts which comprised the Defenses of Washington during the Civil War. Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site is located at 4301 West Braddock Road in Alexandria, just off I395. Free parking is available adjacent to the museum.
