Mal Reynolds was right: if someone tries to kill you, you try and kill them right back! Or so sez this press release about a study out of Florida State University: "Recent studies indicate people who employ self protective strategies are better off than those who do not. And, even better, you do not have to be an expert martial artist to expertly protect yourself or a loved one." Found at TFS Magnum; their link to the study is broken but I found it here (warning, huge PDF file).

In less important news: cow tipping is a myth, again backed up by academic studies (via [livejournal.com profile] aetiology). Very good news for cows, who I would imagine get irritated at repeated attempts; not so great for bored people :P

LOL!!!!! Your average cow, and most of the sub-average ones, have no difficulty taking care of two-legged irritants with a well-placed hoof. Most of 'em wouldn't even wait for a first attempt at tipping ... they'd just assume you're an irritant and take care of you right back (to misquote Mal) first. ***this opinion voiced by a person who has sported a few hoof-shaped bruises in her life, even though she had no intention of being irritating***

P.S. Where I grew up, cow tipping was the equivalent of a snipe hunt ... it was something you lured some poor, unsuspecting townie into trying. ;-)

***grin*** Didn't learn that one until I moved out west (no jackrabbits or antelope where I grew up). But I knew all about prairie oysters BEFORE I left Ontario. ;-)
