Of interest to me because I was raised in the South and a lot of the repressiveness sounds awfully familiar, but I'm pleased to see so many intelligent and genuinely curious questions.

Given how widely read you are, I'm surprised you hadn't heard of her before, but - I'm glad I could point you her way :)

A lot of her books are available thru Half.com severely discounted. Don't work for Half.com, just sayin' :)

Being tv-less, I'm not as clued into popular culture as I might be. I also don't listen to popular radio, or NPR, or the BBC, 'cause we don't get them fancy thangs in South Dakota. ;p
