They're not genetically "wired" to taste sweet. If your cat is trying to get into the ice cream bowl with you, s/he's attracted to something else in the ice cream.

I've heard about cats not liking sweets for years and seen ample anecdotal evidence, but this is proof, dammit!

I read an interesting article about cats, diet, blood sugar and diabetes. Cats aren't metabolically designed to live on any significant amount of carbs, and if they do, they tend to get diabetes. It still doesn't answer the chicken and egg question, but liking sweet stuff would be a definite drawback for cats, at least if they could get carb-y stuff.

There was more to it than that, but the upshot is we're trying to move Dr. G off of dry food and onto something with less carbs.
