Spent a lot of Saturday on the sofa getting over the last dregs of infection and fever. Still on the antibiotics which tear a hole in my stomach, but at least I can finally breathe :)

Sunday D. and I were well enough to get out and see H2G2.

I'm gathering from reading other reviews on my friends list that you either loved it or hated it. I enjoyed it - yes, some of the jokes got lost, but I thought that the characters were very well realized: particularly, Zaphod was appropriately over the top and Arthur was very, very ordinary - just as he needed to be. And Marvin just.. worked. I can't remember if he was originally planned to be so rounded and cutesy, but given his personality it was wonderfully ironic :)

Costume/design notes: Trillian's white jumpsuit had some interesting details, but Zaphod's series of loud outfits stole the show! The Heart of Gold was rounded and toy-like throughout - including Marvin.

I don't seem to remember this much of Trillian in the book, but it's been a couple of years since I've read it. Indeed, I think maybe I enjoyed the movie more than some because while I read the book, it's not a nostalgic part of my childhood, etc. My expectations were less than if I'd been sitting on years of anticipation :P

Also finally received my copy of English Handwriting 1400-1650 and have been going through it with a magnifying glass to try and teach myself to read the medieval alphabets. It's tricky because a number of the facsimiles have such damned small text, and in all time periods some people just have crappy handwriting :P I think I might be getting used to the yogh="gh" and thorn="th", so I'm trying not to look too hard at the Wiki entries lest I get intimidated :P

And why am I wasting my valuable time on this? Because I want to see if I can :P

Also recieved my books for the database class, which I was nervous about opening until I knew absolutely, positively they were the right ones - break the seal and no returns, so if they're not right I'm out ~$90. I got to the class site and am reassured that these are correct, so I'll be cracking those this week.

In one interview (just don't ask me which one), Douglas Adams mentioned feeling badly about not making greater use of Trillian, as she was clearly the most intelligent character in H2G2. Looks as if he was working on remedying that in the screenplay. :-)

There's nothing describing Marvin's physical appearance in the radio show, but the first book only describes him as being beautifully made (with an outer skin of brushed steel), but with his depressed body language ruining the whole effect (I always thought the TV version was far too boxy/clunky, since I always had thought of him as a sleek, streamlined figure that slouched ***grin***).

Funnily, most of the negative opinions I've seen/heard seem to revolve around it not following the book (or the TV series). People don't seem to recall that the many versions of Hitchhiker's all had varying plots that vaguely followed the same path ... IMHO, it's only logical for the film version to be different (although I'm sure Douglas Adams would have hated it, just as he hated all the other incarnations ***grin***). My personal rating is three thumbs up and I'm looking forward t seeing it again. :-)
