Cleaning off my ironing board and finding more suitable storage for some of my fabrics is forcing me to reckon - just what do I want to do with this stuff?

  • Teal green linen canvas (around 4-6 yards): originally got this ~3 years ago for a kirtle; then learned that kirtles are appropriately made out of wool. Now not sure whether it wants to be a farthingale, an arming doublet, something else, or just go back to the original kirtle plan.

  • white china silk (~ 6 yards) - purchased at an Indian fabric store during Costume Con last year for the sinfully good price of $2/yd; originally thought I might make some chemises but I don't want to sully good silk by wearing it next to the skin! Partlet and matching sleeves? Maybe.. maybe a white Regency gown (would definitely need some sort of petticoat under it - awfully sheer).

Thoughtful suggestions will be considered. I've been hanging onto this stuff for some reason, just wish I could actually think of one!

Linen is great for kirtles (nice and cool). I have 2.

You're hanging onto it because someday you'll come across the perfect inspiration. And it would be horrible to come across the perfect inspiration and NOT have the materials! ;-)

Ooh, you're evil - making an excellent point, but not helpful in this context! I've gotta somehow STORE this stuff, you know - and when fabric is made into a garment logical storage somehow becomes much more obvious....:P

Tell ya what ***looking around at fabric piled on table and chairs and in bags under table***, when I figure out how/where to store mine, I'll share the secret. :p

Sounds like a deal to me! :)

Actually, I fell in love with this last time I was in IKEA (it's a dark, glossy cherry red in RL) ... the drawers are perfect for fabric storage, large and deep ... but the price is a tad steep for emergency fabric storage. :p

Ah well ... the hunt shall continue.

someone like you can have too much fabric? *wide eyes*

I came to think of the Carl Larsson and how that house uses space to store stuff in inventive ways. I'll see if I can find a good link...

Actually, you are right - one can never have TOO MUCH fabric - it's just a case of too little space to put it in!

If you can find that link I'd be very interested!
