And because it's costume related, I HAD to participate!

Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] flummoxicated

1. What is your favorite fabric?
Chinese silk brocade, at least right now.

2. Best pattern you have ever used?
Historical: Drea Leed's corset generator. Modern: a Vogue pants pattern that fit so well I've made it at least 3 times!

3. If you had to choose to make a dress from either the 16th century or 18th century which would you choose and why?
The 16th, because I've never done a nobles gown, nor done any class from this period with really good materials

4. Last costume book you purchased?
The Costumemaker's Art

5. Do you prefer hand sewing or machine sewing?
Machine - I'm already well on my way towards carpal tunnel, no need to make it worse!

6. What type of sewing machine do you own?
Last year's basic model Kenmore

7. If you were given a choice to visit a museum to study costumes, what country and museum would you choose?
The V&A, of course!

8. Favorite costume designer---before 1945?
Mariano Fortuny, hands down

9. Do you prefer to work with silk or velvet?
Depends on the silk - if it's taffeta or something else relatively stiff, I prefer silk.

Cotton, most of the time. Wool if I've got something underneath it and I've washed the )*(&! out of it first!

Mariano Fortuny

13. Given the choice would you choose to learn the art of dyeing fabric (natural or chemical) or the art of draping?
Draping

14. What is your dream dress?
Don't make me pick one - really, don't! I seldom wear modern dresses (mostly separates), but for historic: late 16th c. Spanish, complete with high garrotting ruff and black velvet with gold and pearls all over. 16th c. Venetian as long as I get to make chopines (red velvet with gold trim!) And.. and...

15. Arnold or Hunnisett?
Arnold, for her exhaustive research. Arnold Da Man!

16. What costume drama would you prefer to have worked on?
Elizabeth R

17. Favorite Queen?
Elizabeth I - she did it her way :)

18. If you could own only one costuming book, which would it be?
[casts paranoid eye on book collection] Why, what are you thinking?! Probably Queen Elizabeth's Wardrobe Unlock'd because I was lucky to be able to get a copy!

19. If you could only choose one embellishment for your gown, what would you choose?
Pearls - fake, of course.

20. Feathers or fur?
Have never worked with either, but having 2 cats I suspect fur would last longer than feathers :P

21. Green or Red?
Red. Blood red with gold.

22. Assuming you own more than one vintage garment, which piece would you donate to a costume museum?
I own only 1 vintage suit (~1950s?), but it's too worn to go to a museum

I feel SAFE in my Elizabethans - they're like armor!

Star Wars - nostalgic favorite

A friend pointed me towards Spain when I complained that though I love Elizabethan styles, a lot of the colors (russet, tawney, watchet) look terrible on my olive complexion!

Reading through "Hispanic Costume 1480-1530" I'm seeing a lot of black, white, crimson, and shades of green discussed, with gold/silver beading/embroidery, etc. And of course blackwork...

So, much more suitable for a "swarth wench" like me :P
