Today was just one of those days where nothing seemed to come together. Got up late, managed to waste time at addall.com (on the plus side: inexpensive copy of "The Costumemaker's Art" now headed this way), jam the printer, almost late for work, etc. Note to self: I don't have to do everything around here. I really must develop the habit of asking for help when I need it!

My arms and back have been aching dully most of the day; whether this is a consequence of bad practice with the dumbells or a cold coming on remains to be seen.

Gems in the dust: QueerHorror, a reference for those who like hot m/m f/f vampire/werewolf/ghost/etc. action on screen or in print; also the Tower of London's 2005 calendar - Master of the Sword in August, royal jewelers in July, yummy! And finally a news flash: Young Designers Deconstruct Fashion and Save the World (admittedly old news, but the presentation amuses me)!

Going to take my sore shoulders downstairs to do a bit of sewing and viewing of trash television.

I hate to say this but there is definite synergy between the 2. It's very possible to be more sore from exercise than you otherwise would precisely because you're getting sick. I'd treat it as an early warning sign. I'd increase vitamin c to bowel tolerance; you may find it higher than normal already. I'd also increase protein, especially if you're under 1g per kg now. Some increase in carbs may also be warranted. And, as much as it pains me to say it, I'd also take it easier when exercising, especially if you find your energy (strength or endurance) lower than normal. That can be a sign that your body is already diverting resources away from muscles to feed your immune system.

Noted. Will take more C and echinacea before bed. Not too much though - bowels were already, er, intolerant enough yesterday that I opted to skip the choline this morning :P

I MUST stay well this week - I've got training for the rest of the week and it's imperative that I be fit enough to take out my crankiness on my fencing buddies like a civilized person! :P

In that case I would drop or cut back on the choline for the time being. The choline probably reduces your ability to take as much vitamin c as you could otherwise tolerate, but it's not going to help you stay well, whereas the vitamin c is. Keeping the DMAE is probably ok, as long as you don't find it stomach-upsetting.

Even if you drop them both choline and DMAE, you will probably find that the effects do not disappear immediately. More likely they will taper down slowly over a period of several days.

I'd also definitely stop any unnecessary exercise, whether it be weightlifting or medium to intense aerobics. Heavy exercise takes a huge toll on the immune system, since it's the immune system that has to do a lot of the remodelling of the exercise-damaged tissues. Also the remodelling efforts use up many of the same limited resources that the immune system needs. Several studies have found sharp increases in illness caused by intense exercise of various kinds. I would say light exercise is ok, but if you already have sore muscles, I'd definitely lay off for a bit.

And eat! Eat eat eat!
