"The Failure of Zero Tolerance"
Aug. 29th, 2001 11:43 am...and according to this Salon article it is failing worse than I ever could have foreseen. I mean, come on - expulsion from class for taking a tissue from the teachers desk?
This article outlines some of the beef I have with the current public school system. I am all for public schools but it seems that this "zero tolerance" policy is depriving many kids of the already meager education offered. I'm also of the opinion that teenagers in general get a bad rap, and the treatment of "troubled" kids under zero tolerance illustrates this nicely. Why on earth is it so difficult to ask that teachers/school administrators use good hard common sense as opposed to blindly following rules that only allow for black or white situations and do not address the gray areas at all?? <dennis miller>But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong</dennis miller>.
Aggh. I'll probably have to re-edit this because its hardly coherent and I have so many opinions on this subject I can never write them out clearly when I try. Suffice it to say under current rules my sister and I would have spent most of our high school years injail detention.
