my day off

I did nothing I didn't have to, nothing that wasn't fun :)

With some holiday largesse from family, I was able to do a bit of shopping. I got my winter coat used ~15 years ago and it's been rather threadbare for awhile, so it was definitely time for a replacement. I headed out to Ranger Surplus and got another Navy pea coat - hey, it's warm, lasts forever and goes with everything - if it works, why fix it?

I also picked up a couple of pairs of Thinsulate gloves, one a water-proof pair for skiing. I don't ski, but my hands get painfully cold very easily, and at $10/pair I felt foolish going without.

Note to self for future reference: Army/Navy surplus shops have many useful potential costume items, especially used helmets that with the right tools might be adequately re-fit for some sci-fi costumes. There were also a large variety of wonderfully simple and utilitarian uniforms, bags, and other implements that might have many uses. Yes, I can find costume bits anywhere...

While I was in the neighborhood I also stopped out at my local uber-vitamin shop to follow [livejournal.com profile] semmie17's advice and pick up some multi-oil capsules.

Well, not quite - turns out the oil itself gets more bang for the buck, so I picked up a liquid version of same, advertised with "lemon flavor". Lemon flavor actually turned out to be Pledge furniture wax-type lemon smell with no flavor, but it's bearable so I'll give it a go.

Speaking of lemons, I did take D. out to see the Lemony Snicket movie today. Somewhat of a departure from the books, but still well-worth seeing :) One of the big changes is that Count Olaf is funny (hey, it's Jim Carey, after all!), but I suppose for a movie it was necessary - a character that unrelentingly evil would have been too stressful to watch on screen for 2 hours.

Just finished the brownies for [livejournal.com profile] geekchick and [livejournal.com profile] nminusone's party tomorrow, and they are as dense and sensual as ... a dense sensual thing. It's chocolate, ok? They're good :)

Sounds as if you had a very good day ... one you really needed! :-) Thanks for the good news on the Lemony Snicket film ... gonna try to catch it during the holidays. :-)

And hope D. feels MUCH better soon.

Speaking of shopping -- do you know anyone who owns/wears high-top Converse All-stars? I have a few questions about fit.

Not sure, but I can ask around. What particularly about fit (run small/large, wide/narrow, etc?)

They are all in men's sizes, and the manufacturer says they fit about a half size bigger than the marked size. That would mean I would need a men's 6.5 to make a women's 8.5, if the 8.5 fits like a women's 9. The men's width would be a wide fit on my foot, so that's good. The thing is -- I haven't worn any since high school, and I can't remember how they felt. I was just wanting feedback from someone who owns some nowadays. Type in Converse All-Stars on Amazon.com to see what I mean. Help!
