In contrast to the gloomy posts of the past few things, I actually have some fun stuff to share:

Yes kids, it's chapstick for cows, but it is awesome stuff!

I've heard good things about this stuff from various sewing lists; mostly from knitters/crocheters who laud it from the rooftops for its' ability to keep your hands from drying out while handling moisture-sucking yarns. D. always has a problem with dry hands win the winter, so I picked some up for him (along with Udderly Smooth, which he hasn't tried yet).

Bag Balm is an odorless gunk which feels for all the world like a cross between paraffin and Vaseline, but a little dab will do ya and it really does make your hands feel smooth. Even more interesting (attention [livejournal.com profile] jlsjlsjls, [livejournal.com profile] semmie17), it makes your hands warm! Don't know what's in it (no ingredients label, but I gather from the site that lanolin is key), but hey, it works!

Long story short, given how it goes a long way D. and I are sharing it, and I'm looking forward to a winter devoid of cold, chapped hands, dried out nails, and torn up cuticles, hurrah!

I've known about Bag Balm (and similar products) most of my life ... that's what growing up on a dairy farm will do for ya! ;-) (a product we used to use to clean milking machines, called Milkstone Remover, does a MARVELOUS job of cleaning mineral deposits out of dishwashers, washing machines, etc., BTW)

It keeps your hands warm because the layer of lanolin on your skin keeps your body heat "sealed in" ... prevents it radiating from your body. Downside is, I can't use ANY of this stuff when I most need it, which is at work, because the oils/greases/lanolins/etc. mark the books. :-(
